Description

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place in June 1983 in a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2000.

The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates, Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which mainly consist of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him).

Hinamizawa appears to be an ordinary, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the peacefulness abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to express gratitude toward the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi discovers that on the day of the Watanagashi Festival, for the past four years, one person has been murdered, and another has vanished.

Soon, he becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama. In each story arc, he or one of his friends becomes paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their friends.

While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, the truth is gradually revealed throughout the story.

<report>One of the best duology i've ever read, re contextualize everything from the question arc and answers everything in mostly satisfying manner.

Like the first one i played with ps3 patch for voice music art etc.. and loved all of that.

After so many hours with the main cast of characters i can safely say it's one of the best group of friend ever, and the best "friendship matters" plot in anime/manga/vn i've ever experienced.

I'll never forget reading this, became one of my favorite piece of media ever, recommended without a doubt !

<report>I enjoyed the Answer arcs a great deal more than the Question arcs. In this half Higurashi finally starts to tell a story. The themes become clear and characters start to actually be developed. Higurashi finally starts to give the reader some hope and genuine happiness. The group dynamic the forms in this half of the story is something truly special and just truly heartwarming to experience. I have to admit that the final chapter is completely ridiculous but at the same time I had a huge grin on my face the whole time so I'm not exactly sure what to think.

<report>All of the mysteries are unravelled in this 2nd half of Higurashi, as this series loves to reframe different plot beats and arcs to further explore characters and hidden details, presenting an emotionally entertaining and engaging story.

Higurashi Kai takes a departure from the horror mystery aspect of the series, changing its focus to tell strong individual character stories. Higurashi as a whole, is a visual novel that makes you care about each character and their struggles from their own internal fears and guilt. The visual novel takes on deeply personal issues from generational problems, parental conflict, depression, and personal sin. But, in a world, where everything seems fruitless, it’s worth fighting against for an ideal future.

<report>Great build up, I feel chapter 5 through 7 are the strongest of the saga (even though my favorite atmosphere were 1 and 2's by far), but man if the end isn't dragged out.
If the first chapters took too long with setups that lead nowhere or had little payoffs, last chapter was way too repetitive with its exposition.
Mystery reveals were ehhh. I suppose it's controversial to this day.

<report>The second part of Higurashi contains chapters that are labelled as the answer arcs.

Each chapter contains a well-written heart-wretching story, which I believe is the strongest point here and makes these chapters better than first part's (yes, I cried). In each one, new truths come to light, with the already great characters gaining more depth, along with (my) sympathy and affection; still good bgm mixed with good new tracks with the amazing "Dear You" song also in.

The mystery runs deeper than I ever imagined, yet not so at all, but more importantly writer's message here is a very beautiful one.

In the end, the quite lengthy Higurashi as a whole deserves its spot as one of the best VNs around. My only gripe (with this part) would be the last chapter's pacing and general execution.

<report>Higurashi is one of those VN's that take a little time to really set off, it takes a little patience to get through the first few hours. But when the story takes shape you are in for a ride.

The VN has a lot of roughness to it, but it has had touch-ups in the sprite and art department and I think added voice acting as well. However, I read this without voices.

The world of Higurashi had me completely and utterly immersed from start to finish, there were more than a few incredible scenes that I will never forget. The genre that Higurashi evolves into is what made this VN a very special one to me. The sense of dread, uneasiness, anxiousness, and so on. Nothing else I have read has been quite like it.

Note - This review is for both question&answer arcs, so the game as a whole.

<report>Honestly, i've liked Answer arks even more than Question arks. It's a masterpiece.
Every single chapter here is AMAZING. Answer arcs have some strong genre shift compared to QA.
Some real character development here, and full plot reveal!
Graphics remain the same (extremally good, especially console graphics)
The music is GOD TIER - Dai, zts, preholder, DJ NETA-RAW, Rengoku and others are music GODS!
6th chapters is my absolute favourite - it have the best music out there, best plot, best character development and one of the best endings!
5th chapter is also really emotional, especially OST for it.
Also, there is something cool in 8th episode. You'll be surprised!
In conclusion, maybe Higurashi is not definite 10/10 for you, but I think it's 11/10. Highly recommended

<report>It's high moments are great but it just has too many issues in each part I can't overlook. Still filled with a lot of uninteresting stuff and I was slightly disappointed by most of the characters in the end, but the mystery Ryukishi managed to set up is great and Rika's entire character and contextualization is amazing

<report>Coming up from the first part of the game. The answer arc is quite nuts but very enjoyable. The fact that the mystery is actually solvable before this is quite nuts. There's plenty of hints and theories you can make in the question arc that you may even solve it. The music is straight up fire. The character dynamics and interaction is quite strong in this. So if you like that, then this is quite good at it.

<report>This is the better of the Higurashi games. No weak arcs, better story, amazing plot twists, and a whole lot more substance. This game has truly destroyed my perception on fiction forever. Thank you Ryukishi07.

<report>I am torn between 8 and 9 for this one as i found meakashi and tsumiboroshi-hen the best episodes out of all of Higurashi, pretty much its high point. The Rest however was not quite so good in my eyes though still really good. I am actually not quite as happy with the ending as i was with Umineko, i don't think everything fits in tone but oh well. Still my favorite Horror VN with a great cast of characters and a lot of mystery and way better than the anime! Definitely recommend this for anyone remotely interested into this genre
