Description

The setting for the game takes place roughly one year after the events of the first game.Like the first game, the first trial is a tutorial one that guides the player, Phoenix Wright, into all of the elements of the Ace Attorney courtroom. This is established by having Phoenix receive amnesia due to a head trauma. The remaining three trials are united by the mysterious disappearance of prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.

Justice For All plays similarly to the first Ace Attorney game as a visual novel/adventure game. While the game has been adapted from the GBA version to use the DS touch screen, none of the special investigation techniques introduced in the "Rise from the Ashes" case from the first game reappear.

A small but significant change is that a player can now present the profiles of people involved with the case, in addition to the evidence in the Court Record. The player can present them either during the court room or investigative phases.

Justice for All features a new gameplay concept called Psyche-Lock. Phoenix Wright has to unlock several locks that have been placed over a witness' heart in order to reveal the truth.

Description

"Ace Attorney" and main character of the first three games, Phoenix has wanted to be a defense lawyer since he was a kid, and first appears as the new addition to Mia Fey's law practice.

Phoenix is generally easy-going, which usually leads to his friends leading him around. He's dedicated to defending his innocent clients, but because he's just starting out he depends a lot on his boss and mentor, Mia Fey. Phoenix is also a loyal friend who won't back down once he's set his mind on something. He has a bit of a sarcastic side that he usually keeps to himself.

Description

Pearl Fey is Maya Fey's cousin and the youngest known girl in the Fey clan during the time of Phoenix Wright's career. She is a prodigy among spirit mediums, having "intense spiritual power", and also having knowledge of the Fey clan that exceeds Maya's, who is expected to assume the title of Kurain Master.

Although usually a cheerful and innocent little girl, upon meeting strangers, Pearl will not say anything and will instead quickly run away. Even if a stranger greets her nicely, or even if Maya herself introduces him or her, it takes a long time to gain her trust. This is due to her mother teaching her to do this whenever a suspicious-looking person tries to talk to her. Wright has noted her speech, and even her laugh, to be refined in tone.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
During the events of "Reunion, and Turnabout", "Ini Miney" was arrested the next day for the murder of Turner Grey following Wright's defense of Maya, and because of Morgan's role as an accomplice, she was sent to prison, effectively leaving Pearl Fey alone. Morgan had conspired with Miney to kill Grey and have Maya blamed for it, enabling Pearl to inherit the title of Master of Kurain. With no other known relatives, Wright and Maya essentially became Pearl's guardians, showing her the world outside of Kurain Village.

Description

Heir to a prominent family of spiritualists, Maya is Phoenix's obligatory perky sidekick during all three games.

Maya is optimistic, excitable, friendly, curious, and a fangirl for all things Steel Samurai. Like her sister she is tenacious to a fault, and very attached to "Nick" (her and her sister's name for Phoenix). Not always the brightest but loyal and outgoing.

Maya grew up in Kurain, training to be a spiritual medium. After the disappearance of her mother when she was two, and later because her sister left the village, she is destined to become the heir of her family. Though her sister left home they still remain in contact and are very close.

Maya's spiritual powers are still somewhat underdeveloped, and she has trouble calling spirits.

Gumshoe takes great pride in his work, and also in his "strong bond of trust" with the prosecutor's office. He's usually cheerful, is hardworking, and eager to please. But he also takes his job seriously, which causes conflict when he wants to help both sides of the case. Can sometimes be easily discouraged.

Description

Franziska von Karma is the daughter of the prosecutor Manfred von Karma and a formidable prosecuting attorney in her own right. She likes referring to others as "fools" (and variations thereof) and is known to carry a whip (a riding crop when she was younger) with her at all times, which she will often use on almost everybody she meets (although nearly all of her victims are male) with very little provocation.

Franziska von Karma is very much like her father in court; arrogant, but also unrelenting and cold, going to extreme lengths to get a guilty verdict. She likes to use her whip to assert her dominance over other people, including those who are supposed to be her superiors. One notable difference from her father is her greater tendency to lose her cool, which is similar to Edgeworth.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Franziska von Karma learned of her father's loss to defense attorney Phoenix Wright and his subsequent conviction for the murder of Gregory Edgeworth. She also learned of Miles Edgeworth's losses to Wright and his subsequent disappearance. Franziska traveled to Los Angeles to face Wright in court; if she won, she would have beaten a lawyer that Edgeworth could not, getting her revenge for being "left behind".

Franziska believed that perfection was the only option she had. She had to be a "genius" prosecutor, although she knew that she was not really capable of the genius her father had displayed. She viewed trials and investigations as competitions, and considered defense attorneys her enemies. Thus, when she began to lose to Phoenix Wright, she lost what she believed was the meaning of her life. When Edgeworth began to talk about the meaninglessness of win records, she resisted the idea at first, but she eventually began to understand, after which she discarded her identity as a genius living under her father's shadow.

In Gyakuten Kenji, Franziska went on to assist Interpol in its investigation of an international smuggling ring.

Description

Morgan Fey is the head of a Fey clan branch family, and the mother of Pearl Fey. She is a well-spoken woman and has high expectations of people visiting Kurain Village to respect the traditions of the village. Morgan is extremely overprotective when it comes to Pearl, and she tends to view outsiders, especially Wright, with disdain.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Morgan seemed at first glance to be a calm woman who was apologetic at times for being a "lowly" branch family member, but was revealed to be cold and bitter. Dahlia Hawthorne described her as being cold, twisted, horrible, bitter and vengeful. Morgan considered Pearl her most valued treasure, and her crimes were intended to make Pearl the next Master of Kurain. Dahlia Hawthorne, however, once suggested that Morgan cared only about Pearl's ability to become the next Master. When enraged (usually when Wright doesn't refer to Maya or Pearl by their "Mystic" title), Morgan's eyes become white and blank, a trait shared by her daughter Dahlia Hawthorne when her true nature is revealed.

Morgan Fey was married to a wealthy jeweler and gave birth to twin daughters, Iris and Dahlia. She was set to become the heir of the Kurain Channeling Technique, but her sister Misty Fey's superior channeling powers allowed Misty to usurp the position from Morgan. The village looked down on her for losing out to Misty and her family became a powerless branch family. Because of this, Morgan's husband left her and Kurain Village, taking both daughters with him. These events left Morgan a bitter and vengeful woman. Morgan married again and had a daughter, Pearl, who possessed amazing spiritual skills. However, her second marriage ended badly too, with her second husband leaving her soon after Pearl's birth.

Morgan had always been bitter that she had been reduced to a branch family. Mimi Miney met Morgan and they came up with a plan to kill Turner Grey and to frame Maya for the murder. For Morgan, this was in order for her daughter, Pearl, to take Maya's place as the Master.

About a year later, Morgan was transferred to another prison, which also happened to hold her daughter Dahlia Hawthorne, now a death-row inmate. Although initially planning to kill Hawthorne, she chose to conspire with her to murder Maya. Morgan intended for Pearl to become the next master of Kurain upon Maya's death, while Hawthorne participated in order to take revenge against Maya's late sister Mia Fey, who had gotten her convicted. The plan was for Morgan to guide Pearl towards finding some hidden instructions left for her in Kurain Village. Pearl was to bring Maya to Hazakura Temple, and once there, channel Hawthorne, who would use her body to murder Maya. Morgan considered this "my last great wish", this perhaps being the only opportunity left available to her to usurp the main family.

A gentleman working as a bellboy at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel. He is polite and refined.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
The bellboy is actually one of Shelly de Killer's many covers. Under this guise, de Killer lured Maya Fey by alerting her of a phone call at the front desk. De Killer then gave Will Powers a transceiver to give to the defense attorney Phoenix Wright for two-way communication, and subsequently demanded a complete acquittal for Engarde in one trial day, holding Fey as ransom. He kept Fey locked up in Engarde Mansion's wine cellar and informed her of his profession and the deal that he had just made with Wright.

Shortly before the trial, de Killer shot the case's prosecutor, Franziska von Karma, in the shoulder, as a "present" to Wright.

Description

Ini Miney is a "parapsychology" college student who is scatter-brained with little to no understanding of events around her. Interested in the Kurain clan and their psychic abilities, she ventured to the Kurain Village during the events on "Reunion, and Turnabout".

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Ini Miney had a sister, Mimi Miney, who was involved in a malpractice incident at the Grey Surgical Clinic that took place on May 2, 2016. On the 24th of the same month, Mimi and Ini were involved in a car accident in which Mimi crashed her car into a road barrier with Ini in the front passenger's seat. Ini died and Mimi's face was burned beyond recognition. Mimi decided to claim to be Ini so that her face would be reconstructed as such and she would be able to restart her life in the guise of her sister.

Thus, the Ini Miney who appeared as a witness in Maya Fey's second murder trial was really Mimi Miney. This means that nothing is known about the real Ini other than her appearance, although Mimi's mannerisms may be based on her deceased sister since Mimi's real personality was revealed when confronted.

Description

"Director Hickfield", also known as "Director Hotti", is the self-proclaimed director of the Hotti Clinic and the Hickfield Clinic. He is not the real Director Hotti/Hickfield, however, as his interactions with nurses imply that he is actually a patient at the hospital, and the nurses have authority over him. He has even freely admitted to not being the real director. Nevertheless, at one point, the normally astute Miles Edgeworth believed that he was the real Director.

"Hickfield" likes "examining" pretty girls and claims his speciality to be in "young, silky-smooth hottie patients". "Hickfield" also likes to spread gossip about the attractive female patients in the clinic, although he claims to "become 'embarrassed'" when talking about them, to which Wright begged him not to elaborate further. Despite the "Director"'s unique personality, he proved valuable to Wright on one occasion due to his knowledge of female patients, and Wright admitted to himself that he "could learn about how to stay on a lead" from him, however obsessed "to the max" the "Director" was.

Description

Adrian Andrews is a business manager who manages the actor Matt Engarde. Andrews is calm and collected. She is cold, smug and has a strong-willed demeanor.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Prior to and during Juan Corrida's murder case, Andrews was calm and collected, but she was also emotionally unstable and had a tendency to be strongly attached to other women emotionally. Due to these problems, Andrews became emotionally dependent on her mentor Celeste Inpax. This led to her depressive episodes after Inpax's death. Following this, Andrews developed a cold, smug, strong-willed demeanor, trying to imitate Inpax to cope with her death. Her dedication to avenging her mentor fueled her cunning attempts to obtain Inpax's suicide note and frame Engarde for Corrida's murder. During the investigation of Corrida's murder, Andrews quickly developed another unhealthy emotional attachment to prosecutor Franziska von Karma.

Andrews entered the entertainment business and met Celeste Inpax. The two shared a strong bond as mentor and student. Inpax was to get married, but her fiancé, Juan Corrida, called it off. It turned out that he had done so after his rival, Matt Engarde, revealed to the groom-to-be that he had previously been in a relationship with Inpax. Betrayed and heartbroken, Inpax subsequently committed suicide. After the body was discovered, a grief-stricken Andrews attempted to kill herself as well. Failing to do so, she attended counseling sessions for some time. She later became Engarde's manager, biding her time for an opportunity for revenge to present itself.

Rumors circulated that Inpax had left behind a suicide note, and Corrida claimed to have retrieved the note and hidden it. Andrews began contacting Corrida, and eventually got into a personal relationship with him in order to draw closer to obtain the note. He, in turn, took advantage of the situation in an attempt to destroy Engarde's image, by leaking to the tabloid media that Engarde's manager was in a relationship with his rival. Corrida planned to use Celeste's suicide note to destroy Engarde's reputation in a press conference that he was going to hold, after the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel, while pretending to be Engarde in the costume of Engarde's starring role at the time, the Nickel Samurai. However, Andrews secretly planned to burn the note to preserve Inpax's dignity.

After Engarde's Nickel Samurai beat Corrida's Jammin' Ninja in the Grand Prix, Andrews and Engarde ate a meal together in his hotel room. Engarde then had a nap to prepare for the post-ceremony stage show, while Andrews took the opportunity to visit Corrida and prepare for Corrida's concocted press conference. After crossing the hallway to Corrida's hotel room, she found him sitting in a chair in his Jammin' Ninja costume. After pouring a glass of tomato juice for him, she suddenly realized that he was dead, breaking a vase in her shock. Andrews decided to tamper with the crime scene to implicate Engarde as the killer. Before she left, she absentmindedly picked up a white card with a pink conch on it.

Seven months later (during the events of "The Stolen Turnabout"), Andrews became the director in charge of the Kurain Village exhibition at Lordly Tailor.

After Matt Engarde's trial, Andrews was inspired to leave her dependent nature behind. She is now much more cheerful and relaxed, albeit somewhat self-conscious. She still seems to have slight traces of her self-loathing remaining, as can be seen when talking to her after the urn was stolen.

Description

Ken "Acro" Dingling is an acrobat whose legs were paralyzed during an accident six months prior to the murder of Russell Berry, in which Acro was called as a witness. Acro is polite, pleasant and optimistic. Unlike his colleagues in the circus, Acro can see the "diamond shining in [Galactica's] soul", namely his pride as a performer, and he feels that this is something lacking from the others until the magician showed up. He does admit to still having some issues with him, however.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Bat had developed a crush on the ringmaster's daughter, Regina Berry. The two often played pranks on one another. One day, Bat sprinkled some pepper on Regina. The resulting sneezing fit was such that even onlookers could not help but laugh. Regina thought it would be funny to get him back with the same trick, so she doused a scarf in pepper and gave it to the young acrobat as a gift, who eagerly wore it.

During practice on that same day, Bat suddenly made a bet with Regina that, if he could put his head inside the mouth of Léon, the circus lion, then she would have to go on a date to the movies with him. Everyone thought that Bat was being stupid, but since the lion was old and had much experience in doing that very trick, nobody stopped him. Unfortunately, due to Bat's pepper-laced scarf, the lion sneezed, consequently closing his jaws on the young man's head. Acro leaped towards the lion to try to save his little brother, only for the lion to turn on him. The incident caused Bat to suffer severe brain damage and lapse into a coma, while Acro's legs were paralyzed, confining him to a wheelchair.

Although the incident had been entirely accidental, Regina never seemed to grasp the seriousness of what had happened to Bat. This was because her father had told her after her mother's death that people became stars when they died. Acro knew that she had never intended for anything bad to happen, having only wanted to make his brother sneeze a few times. However, Regina's continuing innocent belief that Bat had become a star became unbearable, and eventually, Acro decided to end it all.

Six months after the accident, Acro planted a note into Regina's pocket during one of her daily visits. The note anonymously told "the murderer" that the author had conclusive evidence of what had taken place and that she should be at the lodging house plaza at 10:00 p.m. that night. Using a pulley system, he lowered a large wooden box containing a bottle of pepper (the "evidence" from the incident) from his window to the courtyard below. He then positioned a bust of circus magician Max Galactica, which Money had stolen, above the box. The box was made in such a way that whomever tried to pick it up would have to squat, guaranteeing that the victim's head would be in the perfect position for a killing blow from the bust. All Acro had to do was wait for the sounds of someone trying to lift the box, release the rope in order to kill "the murderer", then hoist the bust back up to his room.

The plan quickly fell apart, however, since Regina had no idea what the note was about, or even that it was intended for her, and had instead posted it on the cafeteria's bulletin board. Although other circus staff members saw it, only Russell seemed to know what it meant. He went to the courtyard in her stead, disguised in Galactica's trademark hat and cloak. Since Acro could not see very far down outside his window due to his confinement to a wheelchair, he had no idea who it was outside the window.

When Acro saw the cloak on the bust, he didn't know how it got there. However, since it was incriminating evidence, he burned it and threw the ashes away. The bust, on the other hand, could not be disposed of so easily, and so he kept it in his room. Acro was racked with guilt for his crime. Instead of killing the intended target, he had killed the ringmaster, who had shown him nothing but kindness and generosity. At first, he contemplated suicide, then thought about giving himself up. In the end, he endeavored not to give up. If he died or was incarcerated, then no one would be left to look after Bat. He therefore went along with the police's suspicion of Galactica.

In the courtroom, Acro took the stand and gave his testimony. Through pressing statements and finding contradictions, Wright was gradually able to figure out what had happened on the night of the murder and, eventually, that the murder weapon was under Acro's blanket. Finally being found out, Acro confessed to the crime and openly wept for murdering the man who had become like a father to him. He also apologized to Galactica for framing him.

It may have been that Acro was not given the death penalty, as Miles Edgeworth told Detective Gumshoe in a phone conversation to "go easy on him".

Description

Turner Grey is the Grey Surgical Clinic's doctor and director. In 2016, there was a malpractice incident at the Grey Surgical Clinic in which 14 in-patients died. Grey blamed a nurse for the deaths. He claimed that she had mixed up the medications, which had resulted in the deaths. On May 24th, she and her sister were involved in a car accident, resulting in the nurse's death. Some believed that Grey was responsible for the accident.

A year later, the clinic is doing badly. Fewer and fewer people are attending. In desperation, Grey asked Ini Miney (who was studying the occult at college) about hiring a spirit medium to call the nurse's spirit, and Ini recommended Maya Fey, future Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique. He intends to make the nurse take the blame for the malpractice incident by signing a written confession. Grey also wants her to write a statement that her death was due to her own negligence and not due to him.

Grey is the type of person who likes to pass the blame onto others, whether it be his clinic staff or even the TV weather girl. He doesn't care that the nurse had died or even that 14 of his patients had died. He is only upset that she had died before taking the blame. He comes across as a rather irritable and self-important individual. Grey also tended to try and out-compete people. Nevertheless, he is a skilled surgeon and is well known to the public, although that is mainly because of his appearance in various tabloid shows due to the malpractice incident.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Two days before the channeling, Grey bought a pistol on the black market, in case the spirit proved to be violent. Ini was actually Mimi, who had tricked her surgeons into giving her Ini's face. Because of this, Fey's channeling would fail if it proceeded, and Mimi feared that Grey would figure out the truth.

To this end, with the help of Morgan Fey, she hid in the channeling room, knocked Maya out, and stabbed Grey in the chest. Although severely wounded, the damage was not enough to cause instantaneous death. Grey survived long enough to attempt to shoot Mimi with his pistol, but he missed. Mimi then took Grey's gun and shot him at point-blank range right in the forehead, instantly killing him.

Lotta Hart's research into him revealed him to have been a controlling man, who would yell at nurses and patients if they didn't do what he wanted. He was also described by Mimi as a "slave driver" who was extremely tough on his staff, frequently overworking them.

Benjamin Woodman, usually referred to by his stage name Ben, is a ventriloquist at the Berry Big Circus. At the time of the murder, Woodman had been at the circus for around four years. Woodman is extremely quiet and shy, preferring to channel all semblance of extroversion through his puppet Trilo Quist. Without Trilo, Woodman is very nervous around other people. When Wright met him, Woodman was never seen making eye contact with anyone.

He gives Trilo a very loud and obnoxious personality that talks very quickly, which is such a contrast to Ben's personality that he almost seems to be a living, intelligent person separate from Woodman. Woodman secretly wishes for stardom and expresses this desire through the fame-hungry Trilo that gets "annoyed" when Woodman makes a mistake.

Description

Shelly de Killer is a feared assassin who is the third heir to a line of assassins known as "de Killer" that first became known in the early 20th century. De killer performs his jobs calmly and with precision, and always leaves behind his calling card -- a white card with a pink seashell design on it -- so that the authorities know of his involvement.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
In March of 2018, the actor Matt Engarde hired de Killer to kill rival actor Juan Corrida during the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix event at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel on the 20th of that month and retrieve Celeste Inpax's suicide note, which was hidden in a Swiss bear toy. After the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix was over, Engarde met up with de Killer, who disguised himself as a bellboy, and paid him as per their contract. De Killer soon afterwards went to Corrida's hotel room and killed the actor by strangling him with his own scarf. The assassin then left his calling card, and gave Engarde the bear.

De Killer then contacted Edgeworth out of court seeking to testify, telling Edgeworth that his client was indeed Matt Engarde. The radio transceiver was brought to the witness stand, but de Killer betrayed Edgeworth and named Andrews as his client. However, Wright exposed contradictory details in the assassin's claims about his supposed client, which caused de Killer to realize what the attorney was doing and cut communications. Just as the judge was about to render a not guilty verdict, von Karma appeared with the evidence that Gumshoe had taken. Wright quickly contacted de Killer again and told him about the videotape. Realizing that de Killer was oblivious to the contents or purpose of the tape, Wright informed him of what Engarde had done.

Furious at this betrayal, de Killer broke his contract with Engarde and informed the court that, if a client willingly betrayed him, de Killer would swear bloody vengeance upon them. He then informed Wright that, since the contract was broken, he would return Fey to him.

The young "genius" prosecutor of the DA's office, and Phoenix's main rival in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Miles Edgeworth began his career as a prosecutor at the young age of 20, and in the four years since has maintained a perfect record of guilty verdicts. Seen as a snob, his condescending nature and relentless prosecution (along with rumors of evidence and witness tampering) have earned him the name "Demon Prosecutor." He despises criminal behavior, and will do anything to get lawbreakers behind bars. And look stylish doing it.

Description

The sole witness of the murder of police officer Dustin Prince, Richard Wellington is a self-proclaimed "Drifting Virtuoso" who is looking for the "right" college.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Wellington was an arrogant and egotistical man who was about as talkative as Wendy Oldbag. He would often make various allusions to historic figures and would compare himself and others to them. Before his appearance in court, Winston Payne warned the judge that Wellington had a tendency to say things that rubbed people the wrong way. His overreaction to Prince seems to indicate he was overly paranoid and had lost the ability to make rational judgments.

Richard Wellington was a small-time con artist involved with a ring of other crooks. If anyone were to look into his cell phone, it would have been all over for him.

One day, Wellington lost his cell phone and tried to call it. It was finally answered by Maggey Byrde and Dustin Prince, who were going out on a date. He was promised his cell phone back, but when he got to the park, he found that the girl who picked up his phone was with a policeman. Fearing the worst, Wellington started to panic and attacked Officer Prince by pushing him off a ledge to the beach below, breaking his neck and killing him in the process. During the struggle, however, Prince grabbed his assailant's glasses and took them with him as he fell.

Wellington spent a lot of time looking for his glasses to no avail. Not wanting to be put on trial for his crime, Wellington decided to frame Byrde for the murder and wrote the name "Maggie" in the sand with the victim's right hand, not knowing how to spell Byrde's name, or the fact the victim was left-handed.

Description

Will is the Steel Samurai during the events of the first Phoenix Wright game. He is accused of murdering Jack Hammer, his co-star who played the role of the Evil Magistrate (Steel Samurai's archnemesis).

Powers' imposing figure belies his gentle and somewhat naïve nature, and he is extremely sensitive about the way he looks. He enjoys working with children, but always wears a mask in his acting roles so that he would not have to show his face in public and "ruin kids' dreams". Despite his friendly and kind-hearted nature, he has a tendency to be pessimistic and has a weakness for celebrity gossip.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Jack Hammer despised Powers for being the Steel Samurai, since the kids loved him and despised the Evil Magistrate, which was Hammer's role. Because of this, he drugged Powers's lunch with sleeping pills. The plan succeeded; Powers was feeling sleepy, and went to take a nap in his dressing room. Hammer then proceeded to take Powers's Steel Samurai costume and pretended to be him by dragging his left ankle to fool the security cameras and Oldbag. His plan was to frame Powers for the events that would take place.

During the events of "Justice for All", it is revealed that he developed a crush on Adrian Andrews. He was also a witness in "Farewell, My Turnabout".

Description

Lotta Hart is a fiery-tempered photographer who appears as a witness in several of series' cases. Much of the photographic evidence in said cases comes from her.

Hart is fierce and loud, but well-meaning. She defends her secrets ferociously, but she is always willing to help Wright, just not for free. Hart is often single-minded in the pursuit of her goals and gets aggravated if she thinks people are mocking her or her homeland. Although she was a paranormal photographer at one point, she is "really bad when it comes to blood and ghosts and stuff", suggesting her want to leap into situations without forethought. Hart also has a habit of changing her job each time Wright sees her. However, it usually incorporates her photography abilities.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Phoenix Wright's first encounter with the fiery red-head was during "Turnabout Goodbyes". She had heard about Gourdy and planned to capture a photograph of the beast. Going by an article in the local newspaper, Hart set up a camera on the shore of Gourd Lake that was set to respond to loud noises. She then pretended to be a college student taking photographs of meteor showers so as to throw off any "shutterbugs" that might try to steal her scoop.

The next time Wright encountered Hart was a year later in Kurain Village. She was a self-styled "paranormal photographer" and was in search of another big scoop. She was present outside Fey Manor's Channeling Chamber when Turner Grey was shot and dashed into the room with Wright to find what appeared to be a possessed Maya Fey covered in blood, with the dead body of Grey lying in his own blood. Hart quickly snapped a couple of photographs (despite protests from Wright) before being herded from the room by Morgan Fey.

Lotta Hart appeared at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel during the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix (in the events of "Farewell, My Turnabout") in order to get a tabloid scoop on the scandal between Adrian Andrews and Juan Corrida. She wrote a note saying that Matt Engarde had made Adrian Andrews get close to Juan Corrida keep an eye on him (as they were rivals). Wendy Oldbag, a security guard at the hotel, stole Hart's camera, and used it to take a picture of the Nickel Samurai (really Adrian Andrews) leaving the crime scene.

In Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, Hart was spotted by Miles Edgeworth and Kay Faraday during a Steel Samurai show at an embassy. Edgeworth vaguely remembered her but avoided interacting with her due to a feeling that talking to her would be very unpleasant for him. She later took a photo of the Yatagarasu apparently flying above the rose garden in the embassy.

In Gyakuten Kenji 2, three weeks after the Yatagarasu incident, Mikiko Hayami clued Hart in on a black market evidence auction going on at the Big Tower. Hart learned of a secret 51st floor above the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee meeting room, accessible only through a hatch and ladder on the viewing platform at the top of the tower. The two decided to work together on this scoop; Hart would infiltrate the 51st floor, while Hayami would use a wiretapping device to intercept wireless communications.

Description

Matt Engarde is an action star who plays the titular character in Global Studios' "The Nickel Samurai". He is the defendant in the murder of Juan Corrida ("Farewell, My Turnabout"). Engarde is a seemingly careless, weak-willed, and somewhat self-absorbed young man, with a liking for wine and motorcycles but no apparent control of his own life. He takes every opportunity to use his wristwatch cell phone to ask his manager, Adrian Andrews, about even the most basic decisions. He isn't a very tactful speaker, and had the habit of addressing people as "dude", calling Wright "Mister Lawyer dude".

However, Engarde was also an infamous playboy who used his boyish charm and seemingly pleasant attitude to gain popularity with women. He justified his actions by calling it "just a game." When it came to rival Juan Corrida, he was known for being extremely competitive.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Engarde's seemingly harmless and flaky persona, however, was only a façade, designed to divert negative attention away from him so that no one would suspect him of any wrongdoing. In actuality, he was a sociopath, seeing other people as objects he could manipulate to further his own ends and then promptly discard. This difference in personality was so stark that Engarde even spoke of his "other self" as a separate person, as if he had some sort of identity disorder. Scheming and extremely paranoid, he trusted no one, but this ironically proved his undoing.

Two years prior to his trial, Engarde dated his manager Celeste Inpax. Adrian Andrews, who would later became Engarde's manager, described them as being happy. However, he broke up with Inpax one day. Later, he learned that his rival Juan Corrida was planning to marry her. Knowing that it would hurt Corrida deeply, Engarde confessed to his fierce rival that he had dated her first. Corrida called off the marriage; heartbroken again, Celeste Inpax hanged herself, allegedly leaving a suicide note that was hidden by the man who found her body, Juan Corrida.

For the remaining years, the two men continued their rivalry with Engarde rising to the top of his acting career. Engarde gained a reputation for being "refreshing like a spring breeze", besting Corrida in popularity polls. Corrida, however, conspired with Andrews, who became Engarde's manager, to disclose the suicide note, which Corrida had actually forged, that would destroy that image.

During the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix at Gatewater Imperial Hotel, which the Nickel Samurai won, Corrida arranged a press conference, during which he would appear in the Nickel Samurai costume and reveal the false suicide note. Realizing that Corrida was a threat to his reputation, Engarde purchased spy cameras to keep close tabs on him and eventually hired a professional assassin named Shelly de Killer to kill him for the bear figurine that contained Inpax's suicide note. Engarde recorded the killing to use as a way to blackmail de Killer.

Engarde was arrested for Corrida's murder because of evidence planted by Andrews. In response, de Killer abducted Maya Fey to force defense attorney Phoenix Wright into getting an acquittal for Matt Engarde. Wright confronted Engarde at the detention center and accused him of hiring de Killer to assassinate Juan Corrida. When Wright figured out the truth, Engarde finally showed his true colors.

During the final trial, Engarde ordered de Killer, who had escaped from the police with his captive the night before, to bring the videotape containing the recording of the murder to him, instructing him not to view it himself. However, de Killer failed and left the tape, along with three other pieces of evidence, behind for Dick Gumshoe to take. Franziska von Karma eventually brought the tape to the trial. Wright informed de Killer of his client's plans of blackmail, which angered the assassin. He broke his contract with Engarde, releasing the hostage Maya Fey, and vowed to kill him. The only way Engarde could escape from de Killer's wrath was to admit his guilt.

Description

Maggey Byrde was one of Phoenix Wright's clients who is especially notable for her very bad luck. Despite this, Maggey is cheerful and enthusiastic. She was the girlfriend of Dustin Prince, the murder victim of the first case, "The Lost Turnabout".

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Soon after her trial, Jean Armstrong employed Byrde as a waitress at his restaurant, Trés Bien.

On Dec. 3, 2018, during her shift, Byrde served coffee to two men, Furio Tigre and Glen Elg, at a table. She saw Tigre slip potassium cyanide into Elg's cup of coffee; when Elg drank his coffee, he collapsed and died, causing Byrde to faint. When Byrde woke up, she found that she had been accused of the crime; Tigre had had Armstrong hide Byrde and Elg in the kitchen and reenact the crime to fool a witness into thinking Byrde had killed the victim. Byrde again hired Phoenix Wright to defend her, but Tigre appeared instead, disguised as Wright, and Tigre intentionally put up a poor defense against the case of prosecutor Winston Payne. A month later, however, the real Phoenix Wright appealed the case and exposed Tigre as the killer, clearing Byrde's name once more.

After her stint as a waitress, Byrde was hired as a security guard in the Prosecutor's Building. One day, Jacques Portsman asked her to open his door, but Byrde had lost her master key, so she merely pretended to lock the door. Byrde later became a suspect in the murder of detective Buddy Faith in Miles Edgeworth's office, to Gumshoe's dismay. Portsman deduced that Byrde had walked in on the detective robbing the office and killed him, but Edgeworth refuted Portsman's claims.

Description

Regina Berry is the naïve daughter of the late Berry Big Circus ringmaster Russell Berry. She works as an animal tamer at the circus alongside Regent the tiger.

Since Regina was brought up at the circus, it is the only world she knows. As such, she has a very fantastical view of the world and is extremely naïve. She believes that when people die, they become "stars in the sky". She also doesn't understand that the Trilo Quist puppet was only that, a puppet. She thinks of the dummy as a tenor who sings in the circus and that the ventriloquist himself is just someone who hangs around with "Trilo".

Without realizing it, Regina often uses her looks to her advantage. Moe describes her as being "cuter than a little puppy Maltese" and people often give in to her demands with a single cutesy look from her.

By Gyakuten Saiban 2, Regina eventually began to take on more responsibilities at the circus. At some point, she hired a coworker named Sōta Sarushiro, whom she tasked with the various logistics of their shows. In 2019, the two performed an animal show at a local prison. The show involved a love story between Regent and an elephant named Dali. Sarushiro played a villainous monkey whom Dali would blow away in the climax of the story.

During Gyakuten Saiban 2 (a year later) he assumed the disguise of an ice cream vendor. Sōta Sarushiro hired de Killer to assassinate President Teikun Ō of Zheng Fa. The assassin first tried to infiltrate the president's bodyguards by disguising himself as one. He managed to gather a good amount of information on the president's protection, including the names of the leader and sub-leader of the guards, and soon struck. Although the leader of the bodyguards, a man called Gai Tojiro, noticed de Killer, by that time the assassin had managed to get close to his target. The assassin managed to easily overpower most of the bodyguards, beginning with the sub-leader Manosuke Naitō, whom he grabbed by the throat so hard that the latter was later forced to wear a neck brace and was unable to turn his head right. Unfortunately for de Killer, Gai Tojiro proved far more formidable, as he quickly grabbed, twisted and shot the assassin's left arm. De Killer managed to escape with his wounded arm and gained respect for Tojiro's skill.

Billy Bob Johns, known more commonly by his stage name Maximillion "Max" Galactica, is a stage magician and the most well-known performer at the Berry Big Circus. He is the defendant in the murder of Russell Berry, the circus's ringmaster.

Galactica's obsession with his own beauty and fame borders on narcissism, even constantly looking at the detention center cameras as if they were TV cameras. However, during certain times - such as when he found out he was being arrested for the murder of the ringmaster and not just being questioned - he reverts to his true self, a "country bumpkin" with no trace of his former narcissistic demeanor.

It should be noted that he is also very territorial, fighting hard for the heart of Regina Berry with Benjamin Woodman. Juan Corrida was a young action star who starred as the titular character in the Worldwide Studios show The Jammin' Ninja. He had a fierce rivalry with actor Matt Engarde, star of the Global Studios show The Nickel Samurai. He is the victim of the "Farewell, My Turnabout" case.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Two years before his death, Corrida met Celeste Inpax and took her as his manager. The two quickly fell in love and became engaged. However, Engarde came told Corrida that Inpax was his former lover. Outraged by this revelation, Corrida called off his wedding with Inpax, resulting in her suicide.

When Corrida found the dead Inpax, he forged a suicide note and kept it in his person, preparing for an opportunity to ruin Engarde with the note. Corrida began to concoct a plan for revenge against Engarde with Adrian Andrews, who was Engarde's manager and Inpax's protege. Tabloid papers witnessing them together reported that Corrida and Andrews were in a scandalous relationship.

Two years after Inpax's death, the Jammin' Ninja participated in the third annual Grand Prix, and Corrida's plan to ruin Engarde was set into motion. Corrida had arranged with Andrews to get a Nickel Samurai costume and to call a press conference with the Nickel Samurai, in which Corrida would appear, dressed as the Nickel Samurai and pretending to be Engarde, and "confess" to Engarde's manipulation of Inpax.

However, Engarde had a plan of his own to get Inpax's will back from Corrida. He hired an assassin, Shelly de Killer, to kill Corrida in his room. After a struggle, de Killer managed to strangle Corrida with a scarf.

Mimi Miney was a nurse at the Grey Surgical Clinic working under Turner Grey, until she was involved in a car accident in 2016. She died in the accident, with her younger sister Ini surviving the ordeal.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
In actuality, Mimi was the survivor and, under the façade of her sister, she was the key witness in the second murder case put against Maya Fey. The whole case would eventually revolve around, and reveal the truth about Mimi's past.

During her time at the Grey Surgical Clinic, Mimi would often come home to her sister exhausted, having been overworked by Turner Grey and feeling overwhelmed by other people's expectations. In 2016, Mimi Miney was involved in a malpractice incident at the Grey Surgical Clinic, which resulted in the deaths of 14 patients. Grey claimed that she had mixed up the patient's medication, which was later confirmed by Mimi herself. The malpractice incident attracted much attention from the world's media, appearing in talk shows, magazines, tabloids and the like. This continued for weeks.

Over two weeks after the malpractice incident, Mimi was involved in a car crash with her sister Ini. This resulted in Ini's death and Mimi's face becoming so badly burnt that she was unrecognizable. She was transferred from the general hospital to the Hotti Clinic for reconstructive surgery, arriving with her entire body wrapped in bandages and her arm in a cast. Using her dead sister's driver's license, Mimi decided to take Ini's identity and start a new life. Since the surgeons who operated on her were unable to verify Mimi's true identity, they reconstructed her face so that she was, for all intents and purposes, her deceased sister. This ordeal resulted in Mimi being hospitalized for about seven months.

Mimi continued life as her sister, even attending college to study "parapsychology", despite loathing the paranormal. This new life was shattered one day when Grey came to her to ask her about spirit channeling. He wanted to channel Mimi to make her write a confession and take responsibility for the malpractice incident and her driving accident. Realizing that the channeling would fail and blow her cover, Mimi told Grey about Kurain Village and Maya Fey, and then went there ahead of time. She conspired with Morgan Fey to murder Grey and implicate Maya Fey as the killer.

Sean Dingling and his older brother Ken were abandoned by their parents when they were children. Russell Berry, the ringmaster of the Berry Big Circus, took them in and later employed them as acrobats. Ken and Sean became known as "Acro" and "Bat," respectively.

Bat developed a crush on the ringmaster's daughter, Regina Berry, and they would constantly play pranks on each other.

One day, Bat made a bet with Regina that if he successfully stuck his head into a lion's mouth, Regina would go on a date with him. Unfortunately, earlier that day, Regina had covered Bat's scarf with pepper to make him sneeze. Bat didn't sneeze, but when he stuck his head into the lion's mouth, the lion sneezed and bit Bat, critically wounding him. His older brother, Acro, tried to wrestle the lion off Bat, but was injured and became paralyzed in the process.

Bat remained in a coma, and Acro was confined to a wheelchair. Regina, being too naive to understand what really happened to Bat, quickly got over him and moved on. Angered at this, Acro devised a plan to kill her six months later, which resulted in her father's death instead. The resulting trial of one of the circus performers led to Acro's implication as the killer.

On his 30th birthday, right after his shift, Prince went on a date with Byrde to Exposé Park, near the police headquarters. Byrde gave him a yellow baseball glove to thank him for covering one of her night shifts. During the date, Byrde found a cell phone. The owner, Wellington, soon called the phone, and Byrde and Wellington agreed to meet at 6 p.m. for him to retrieve his phone.

However, Wellington saw that Byrde was with a police officer, Prince, who was still in uniform. Wellington had connections to con artists, and he panicked, thinking that Prince had seen the numbers of con artists on his phone. Wellington pushed Prince off a ledge, breaking his neck and killing him.

Description

Russell Berry was the owner and ringmaster of Berry Big Circus from its opening until his death in 2017. He left behind a daughter, Regina Berry. Russell Berry was a good man and a kind employer. When no customers came, he would pay Moe out of his own pocket since the clown had a family to look after. All of the members of the circus respected Russell and he was seen as something of a father figure.

<hidden by spoiler settings>
Wanting to keep things fresh, Russell added a new act to his circus, a somewhat narcissistic magician called Max Galactica. This worked fantastically and his circus was given a new lease of life, but Galactica generated some resentment from the other performers due to his egotistical attitude. Galactica also fell in love with Regina, setting off a rivalry with one of the other circus employees, Benjamin Woodman (or, rather, his puppet, "Trilo Quist"). Galactica was able to negotiate a considerable raise with Russell six months after the Léon incident.

A week after the pay raise, an anonymous threatening letter, given to the innocent Regina by Acro in secret, appeared on the bulletin board, calling out the "killer" from six months ago. Fearful, Russell decided to meet the sender in Regina's stead. That night, he talked with Galactica about an incident at breakfast in which the magician had hit Woodman over the head with a bottle. Galactica took this opportunity to discuss with Russell his proposal to marry Regina. Russell then interrupted the meeting to go out and meet the threat to his daughter at a time appointed by the letter.

Russell put on Galactica's costume and stepped out, being witnessed by Woodman and "Trilo" along the way. When he arrived, a wooden box containing only a container of pepper was lying in the snow. He stooped to pick it up, and Acro, not knowing that it was the ringmaster below his window, dropped a bust of Max Galactica out of it, bashing Russell on the head and killing him instantly.
