Description

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (which takes place chronologically seven years after Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations) is the first game in the series that does not feature Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist, though it isn't the first time a different attorney has been playable. The game takes place in what seems to be a mock of Los Angeles.

The bracelet on Apollo's left arm can be used to "zoom in" on witnesses to gather information about them, and is called the Perceive System. It is used primarily in court to look for motions or actions made by witnesses that show nervousness, like playing with one's fingers. The move even comes with a new phrase, "Gotcha!". The game also includes a "Crime Recreation Mode" that "allows players to reveal hidden clues by re-creating the scene of the crime.

<report>AA4 has at least a few things going for it. What little comedy is present is still funny as ever. A new main character was a refreshing change of pace, and I loved the idea of a genuinely kind, cool prosecutor (although it was a dubious choice to use in him a game that prattles on about how corrupt the legal system is). But, for a game that was supposed to start a new story, the game focuses almost entirely on character development for our old protagonist, Phoenix Wright. Meanwhile, Apollo gets very little in the way of personal story hooks. If the individual cases were good, I could look past these things. But, they're not funny, and their mysteries are not intriguing; especially, when Phoenix solves them for you - even the final case! Not a great start for the "Apollo" trilogy.

<report>The last game in the series that I played, and for me it was a step down from the previous games. Far less memorable. I was not a fan of the new lead character, and the main aspects I enjoyed about the previous games in the series felt weaker. Mainly the humorous character interactions and sillyness. I appreciate the idea of mixing things up, but it felt largely like an experiment that was only passable to me.

<report>Ah, Apollo Justice Ace Attorney. The beautiful failure.

There's a lot to admire about this game from the get-go. We live in a society(tm) full of series and franchises that just don't seem to know when to die, milking their fans for all they're worth. This isn't some cynical cashgrab, though. You can tell from the outset that Takumi didn't want to make "another Ace Attorney game"; he wanted to make something *new*. Phoenix's story is over; he's not in the games title or boxart anymore. Meet the new guy for a new game: Apollo Justice himself.

But the problems with this game are kind of foreshadowed by its title character. Because, while they've certainly shifted the paradigm and given us a... Read more »

<report>This game should've been its own series instead of being promoted as a sequel. It completely ruined the great ending of AA 3, all the promises of "good ending" and "romance" for poor Phoenix and made his future miserable and completely unrealistic.

Basically the future portrayed for the beloved protagonist of the last three games is that he lost one single case and because of that he pretty much became a hobo for the rest of his life, also single and (wo)menless incel, with no friends to support him (all the people who supported him before are just gone), just complete garbage of a human being. And only with the help of the new protagonist he managed to somehow get himself out of his hole... Read more »
