Description

The only thing I can remember is coming to in the middle of an unfamiliar snowscape. Where that was or how I got there, I don't know. I couldn't even remember my own name. The memories just wouldn't come.

I only had a moment, left at a loss, to ponder what to do — but fate seemed intent on furthering my misery as a giant, insect-like monster burst from the snow and ice to attack me.

Naturally, I ran like hell. The creature cornered me anyway.

That's when SHE appeared, as if from nowhere — the beautiful, mysterious girl who saved my life.

She told me her name was Kuon. A beautiful, mysterious girl...

...with a tail and ears like a beast's.

<report>A great game, heavy on the slice of life early on setting up the world and character as much as possible, and really ramping up the intensity in the second part, still it felt short, reason beings it's mostly setup/build up for the sequel mask of truth.

Production value are S tier, one of the best art and chara design i've ever seen in vn, amazing music etc.

Voice acting is truly magnificent, one thing to love and rarely seen in vn is the mc inner tough are voiced, i think it's a great thing more vn should do.

Gameplay is really good, i'm terrible at sprg but really enjoyed it despite that.

While it it can be said it doesn't require playing the first one, it shares lots of characters, reference to event etc, so i can only see this trilogy as a package, really recommended !

<report>I really enjoyed this overall. Fun cast of characters. Kuon as the female lead in particular stood out as being so much more compelling than Ururuu in uta1. The game is not without flaws, but I was glad it doesn't have the pacing issues and general slowness that bugged me in the original.

<report>Simply superior to Mask of Truth. It knows what makes the series good, and has it in spades. The sequel is a lot more somber and more like a classic JRPG and fails to hit the high notes that Mask of Deception does. Seeing lazy Haku's plans succeed yet fail in the most hilarious ways never got old. This has the Haku that Kuon fell in love with. Whereas the sequel is (mostly, but not entirely) just her moping about it the entire game.

<report>When I first saw the protag, I thought it was a shitty relaunch orienrted to a younger audience. Boy was I wrong. It took few hours of reading to gain it's pace, but it was the spirit of original Utawarerumono alright despite so many years passed (both IRL and in the story).

Same world, many relations to original plot, though a different setting and fundamentally different protagonist - annoying in the start, but he is this way for a purpose: initially for pretty decent gags and later for major plot devices.

P.S. really looking forward to reading the #3 VN in VNDB (the next sequel), ending was really promising

P.S.S. what I really hated was this pillar general shounen stuff, many of them had little or no purpose for the plot whatsoever. Dunno, maybe they were introduced for next sequel.

<report>The characters and their interactions and the slice of life were very high quality for the first half of the visual novel. Every character had a unique relationship with every other character and the relationship web would have been dense and varied. The plot again is where this visual novel series fails to live up to the hype, so to speak. However, it was much better this time than the first Utawarerumono entry. The plot probably ranged from 4/10 to 8/10, there were rewarding moments, and unlike the first entry I do not feel like my time was completely wasted here (in terms of the plot). Overall a very decent visual novel.

<report>This review will be as spoiler free as possible. It's is subdivided into three segments: The actual review, a personal recommended playorder of the series for newcomers and a gameplay addendum section where I talk about the SRPG battle system (this is the same as in my Mask of Truth review). The actual review is purely about the game's VN part. If you're interested in the direct sequel as well I recommend my Mask of Truth review which is also completely spoiler free for both games and safe to read for anyone.

<report>Utawarerumono - Mask of Deception: a worldbuilding win
This review does NOT contain spoilers for either Mask of Deception or the prequel. I have, however, played the new release of Utawarerumono, called Prelude to the fallen, before Deception, and my opinions are also based on that edition.

Plot, narration and structure
Thirteen years after Utawarerumono was published, Aquaplus releases the first of two sequels: Mask of Deception. Much has changed since, and a game that was indeed beautiful in 2002, now has some glaring issues. Mainly, it was a product of its times: huge and often pointless/long fanservice, and a plot surely intriguing and captivating, but a bit rushed. Can a VN of 2015 do... Read more »

<report>First off let me preface this for anyone who was wondering, YES this game is a lot better than the first instalment (prelude to the fallen). With that being said I don't think prelude is skippable. I think if you are a fan of mystery/political stories, with a lot of slice of life moments mixed in to develop character relationships and the world, this is the game for you.

Similar to the first game it starts off as mostly slice of life, dropping subtle hints at whats to come later on when the story picks up. I'm not gonna beat around the bush, there are A LOT of slice of life moments, which I was fine with because i enjoy that type of thing, but it might not be for everyone. With that being... <report> The cruelty of war. There are no winners, nor losers in war; there is no right, nor wrong, just opposing ideals.

The sequel to Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen does everything its predecessor did just as well, if not better. Expanding this large world to an even bigger scale, where all characters fit perfectly.

Bonds strengthened over time, memories of trifling everyday matters and good times - this is all the characters hoped for, so how dare anyone take that from them? They will not falter to this so-called fate.

These fifty hours of meeting new people, being greeted by familiar faces, caring for one another, almost felt too short. Perhaps it's just me, but I wanted even more... Read more »

<report>tl;dr: A game that isn’t much of an SRPG, but is an incredibly solid VN with a great cast of characters and story that while not complete has been simply amazing so far.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is the second game in the Utawarerumono franchise. The first entry came out in 2002. This entry came out in 2015, so there was a pretty large gap between the two. I had played the original a long time ago, but I barely remembered it, so thankfully a remake of the first was released in 2018, which I made sure to play before this. In hindsight that was absolutely the right choice, and thus this review will discuss the game very much in light of its predecessor.

The story of this game is... Read more »

<report>Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception

- Synthesized impressions
Utawarerumono: Mask of deception, does so many things right, that your standard for VN quality may actually be raised after reading it.
From the characters, to the visuals, passing by the voice acting, the connection to the previous title, the slice of life and ending with the emotional moments.
I could go on and I actually will, below.

- Context of the review
I've been meaning to read Mask of Deception (M.o.D from now on) for quite some time. I actually picked it up before, but it coincided with one of my breaks from Vn's.
The prequel, Prelude to the Fallen, was the main factor in getting here, since the more I read, the more I... Read more »
