“Near the end of the Showa Era. (Late 1980s)
In the old mansion rumored that a witch lives, Aoko Aozaki who just started learning sorcery and her teacher, a young mage Alice Kuonji, lived together.
But as if he was guided by an invisible string of fate, a young boy called Soujuurou Shizuki joins them and a strange communal life begins…”

“Late 1980s. The golden age full of brightness and spirits. The boy who came to the urban city passes by the two witches who live in the present”

The girl lived hidden as if she’s asleep”

<report>So once upon a time, in an age long forgotten, FGO didn't exist and Type-Moon used to be good. Mahoyo was the second-last work they put out which I consider to be good, and what a work it is. Do not be driven away by its lack of voice acting and its admittedly anti-beginner-friendly prose; this is probably objectively Nasu's most well-written work by a large margin.

If you're here for Nasu's usual chuuni stuff, you've got it. SoL has also vastly improved. He also pulls off the Aoko-Alice-SJR trio so well even as a Fate-biased person I have to tip my (sword-filled) fedora and call them the best characters ever written by him. SJR is amazing. Aoko is wonderful. Alice is my angel.

Kinomi did nothing wrong.

But yeah, can we talk about the lack of a sequel? No? Back to ignoring FGO it is.

<report>A Type-Moon story set in the "Tsukihime" side of the timeline, Mahoutsukai no Yoru is an incredibly well-made linear VN. Its graphics, music, atmosphere and everything about the production is beautiful and was ahead of its time, considering it originally came out in 2012. I found myself awestruck by how good the scenery is, or how the action scenes are portrayed, which got you excited, or how immersive the soundtrack was.

The story of course is also good. IMO one of the better things Nasu wrote. Rather than a traditional VN like Fate/stay night, it reads more like a classic book.

Its strongest point is the dynamic between the three main characters. The main issue I found was that the story is not complete, which is a shame, as hopefully sequels are released in the future.

<report>Been waiting for this game for 10 years

Pros
-Best Visual and music presentation in a vn, + points for a 2012 game
-Flat snark battle was one of the best scenes in type moon vns
-First 5 chapters started very strong, great pacing

Cons
-After chapter 6, pacing starts to be slow as more slice of life than action
- SoL is fine if it wasnt for nasu usual convulating dialogue when describing feelings btwn characters
- Pay off at the final battle falls flat
- Lots of loose ends if you take this vn as a standalone novel

Overall would recommend for any type moon/ action fans. Cannot understate how good the battle scenes are

<report>My favorite visual novel to date. The character moments are phenomenal, even the ones featuring minor characters. The themes and the plot are enthralling. The stakes are probably the lowest out of the Nasuverse, but they definitely feel very big emotionally. I love the vibes of the OST used, it gives a really good atmosphere to the novel. The visuals, animation and overall presentation are the best I've seen so far out of any visual novel, it's truly stunning. It convinced me that this medium when used to its fullest potencial can surpass any other.

<report>This was my first visual novel, and it took me 1 year and 1 month to finish it. However, it was the best; it was KINO, 10/10. All the characters were amazing, though I wish the .5 chapters played while you were progressing instead of going back and forth to the archive to read them. They seem pretty important to the main story, and you could miss some things. Also, Alice is the best girl.

<report>Art / Production- 10/10
Characters - 8.5/10
Plot - 8/10
Setting & Atmosphere - 9.5/10

OVERALL: 8.5

Mahoyo is perhaps the most stunning visual novel I have ever played in terms of its presentation. Fully immersive, a stunning amount of sprites, CGs, animations - I wasn't prepared for just how good these elements would be.

The only thing holding Mahoyo back is that the story feels incomplete. This isn't to say there isn't a good conclusion to the story - there definitely is - but there is also quite a lot left hanging. I understand that this was written with a second and third instalment in mind, which at this moment may never be completed, and it shows. This is... Read more »

<report>It's hard to find faults with something that does so many things so well, so consistently. Mahoutsukai no Yoru is so incredibly polished, with probably the highest quality presentation I've currently seen in a visual novel, and yet there seems to be a distinct absence of the typical shortcomings you would expect from a narrative product this highly produced.

Take a popular show or a blockbuster movie, or a triple A game. What I've noticed is that these things typically tend towards an "identity," or a distinguishing character, which I assume allows it to be competitive in a market full of other products that are likewise fighting for an audience's attention. You can find this, I guess you... Read more »

<report>I'm at Ch.8/13 and decided to drop this. Let me say this straight, I don't care for or dislike most of the characters. They are either pushovers, pretentious or unlikeable. Except the main guy who is honourable and intelligent as he is kind-hearted and manages to adapt very well to the city life and other ridiculous circumstances. However, one thing that left a sour taste was how he's often played off as a joke for some cheap tsundere gag, which hurts my liking of him. Let me put this in perspective the most damning instance, you've spent about 10 hours seeing the main girl and guy develop their relationship for a period of months, almost getting killed and trying to save each other's skin... <report>This is a fantastic and brief visual novel that lays the foundation for greater works to come in the future from Type-Moon. My exposure to Type-Moon at this point is extremely limited. My only experience with any of their works is playing through Tsukihime -A Piece of Blue Glass Moon-. Coming into this, I didn't expect it to be at as high of a bar as Tsukihime, which became from favorite VN last year after reading it. I was blown away though. The effort to make the story as engaging as possible especially in the partially animated action scenes is truly remarkable. The music leaves a lasting impression. The visuals, beyond the fancy animations, are exceptional. The three main characters all... Read more »

<report>It took so many years, and finally, I could read it!

First things first, Witch on the Holy Night is simply gorgeous. Of course, this is expected from Type-Moon. When Fate/Stay Night came out, its combined use of screen transitions, sound effects, and small animations was groundbreaking and created a unique reading experience. Witch on the Holy Night goes one step further. There is no such thing as a bland screen. The direction combines and positions sprites and BGs in a way that all the screens look like CGs. It's a case when describing is not enough, you must read to understand the sound and visual masterpiece that chapters such as The Night of the Witches are.

Story wise, unfortunately... Read more »

<report>This is an amazing VN, the most visually impressive of anything I've read.
The plot is very interesting, I liked it more than the one in Tsukihime. It is clear that Nasu thought it through very well during the long time that he carried it for those long 10 or so years. A novel full of lore - magic and magecraft, true magic, familiars and ploys - it's just an idyll for those who like to delve into the universes of fiction.
I used to be a big fantasy fan - and Mahoyo reawakened my love for the genre. And slice-of-life here is simply interesting to read. And the nights of the witches here are incredibly engaging, that's it

About the characters:
Sojuro is one of the best mail-protags in VNs I... Read more »

<report>I've read fate/stay night and hollow atarixia before this and I gotta say this is my favorite work from nasu by far. All of the characters are very enjoyable, even the side characters. I feel like I could listen to them babble on about random things forever. The way that the characters bounce off of each other with their lowkey humor is very nice.

Battles are as also good as you'd expect from the funny mushroom man, which is to say very epic. I read some people complaining about how the puppet and Alice fight were too long, but I thought that both were very good.

Also, gotta say that art and sound are on point here. Hirokazu Koyama is prolly my favorite artist now, and I have basically... Read more »

<report>I love this story so much and hold it really dear to my heart. Everything about it is perfect, the SOL is genuinely some of the best I've ever seen; I never got bored even for a moment because the character interactions were just so good. The characters in Mahoyo are just something else, I love Soujuurou, Aoko, and Alice so much; all three of them is what makes this story work and seeing them slowly get closer to each other was so heartwarming to see. Soujuurou is by far one of my favorite male leads ever, it was really refreshing to see a character who has nothing special going on for him, he's just a regular dude from the mountains forced to live with two mages. I love his character and... Read more »

<report>I believe that the most relevant feature, of Witch on the Holy night, is that it doesn't fit in the traditional VN standard. It's good reading, has excellent visual representation, and proficient audio performance, but the "book like" structure, the NVL, the lack of common tropes/devices, the departure from heavy dialogue, and the abundant descriptions, all lead to the conclusion that you have something different in your hands. In a way it's wonderful, and highly welcome, though some caveats come to mind.

As usual I'm starting with the "technical", then move on to the interesting bits.

- Visuals - The title takes a different (from other VN's), and very immersive approach on this front... Read more »

<report>I have completed the game 3 times + I have read 9 chapters of remaster and a bit of 12 chapter to see the battle in FULL HD, I want to tell you what I think about the story rereading it that much times.

It's honestly a miracle that Mahoyo exist, if an information how it was created is truth, then Takeshi asked Nasu to make his first ever written novel (Witch on the holy night original in its novel form) and remake it into a visual novel trilogy, the results is simply the most unique visual novel ever, nothing can come close it. Even After so many years after it's release.

The beauty of Witch on the holy night in it's presentation, visuals and writing. I will say that Nasu wrote very bad... Read more »

<report>TL;DR: Peak fiction like you’ve never seen. 11/10. Go play it
Okay, let’s get serious now.

There is quite a lot of praise for Mahoyo here. More or less every crease of the game has been applauded. The story, the music, the characters, etc. And absolutely justified too. Yet, what I feel like writing here, is that it hasn’t been lauded enough. That’s right! 10/10 isn’t enough for me, and I feel like, before even talking about the game itself, it has to be put into a proper perspective.

I’ve played somewhat close to 40 visual novels at the moment. A lot of them old, really old for the genre. But overall, I’ve been all over the time periods. From nineties, to ooze, to even 2020s now. And some... Read more »

<report>So I am a huge fan of anything Nasuverse and this is no exception, The issues that are in Fate/Stay Night questionable decisions and really bad H scenes non of that exist with Witch On The Holy Night/ Mahoyo this is truly a breathtaking and remarkable masterpiece of a visual novel that is immaculately written and incredibly charming. This visual novel as 3 of the greatest characters ive ever read about and their interactions together are so special you cant help but want more when this is done. The conversations truly add to delve deeper into the psychology of the characters and their personalities. What Which On The Holy Night does so well for me is explain what it is like in the Nasuverse... Read more »
