Description

Virtue’s Last Reward follows the trials and tribulations of Sigma, who is drugged and kidnapped from his university. He wakes up in an elevator with a girl named Phi. After discovering they are unable to escape the elevator, a strange rabbit appears, introducing itself as “Zero III.” Zero III explains that they are about to play the “Nonary Game: Ambidex Edition,” a deadly game of life and death.
What’s in store for Sigma, Phi, and the seven others they eventually meet? Why have these nine been chosen, and most importantly, who will they ally with and who will they betray?

<report>VLR is kind of weird. The beginning is really compelling...the end is really compelling...and then there's a huge spot in the middle where I remember basically nothing, no matter how many times I play. I appreciate how many different endings - both good and bad - the game has to offer, and I like how the gameplay is effectively incorporated into the narrative (I also just like the fact that there IS gameplay). But, it does feel like the story suffers from being overall less cohesive than 999, probably due to the huge increase in possible outcome. Nonetheless, it's a good game, and a respectable sequel.

<report>+ well-balanced between the escape and story parts. The puzzles neither too easy nor unsolvable, perfect for a person who loves it.
+ amusing characters. Everyone's presence is making sense and there's always a story behind it. The second game also has a charismatic villain moniker.
+ extremely well English voice acting for a Japanese titles.
+ good music, improved navigation, vast variety of the storylines (all of it about the second game compared to the first)

- sometimes unnecessary info dumping.
- the sequel is way more enjoyable than the first game of the series, but you should play the first to grab the sense of what's happening after.

<report>Compared to the first entry story is slow paced. It took until 15+ hours till you really start to take care for the characters and you start to know them better than just random strangers.

Once you hook up with the characters and spent more time with them the game starts to shine and benefit from both story and well written characters.

As a slight negative I think there are too many endings and most of them are meaningless. I also like the setting of the first game more - boat compared to warehouse.

Apart from slow beginning and some of the endings which doesn't contribute to the story I find VLR even or superior from it's predecessor.

The story as a whole is nothing short of a masterpiece. Puzzles are satisfying as they introduce secret files though tedious to the end of the game.

<report>Really solid story and very enjoyable mystery. Characters are interesting and engaging. The main downside to this that stops me from giving it a 10 is the very long, drawn out way all the routes need to be played. It takes so long, with so much wasted time that the pacing can't be overlooked. The visuals also aren't the best, though they are certainly okay. I still give it a 9 because besides these two points, the game does everything excellently.

<report>A masterpiece, an insane complex and almost asinine level of mysteries that respect the players intelligence. It's used the medium its given to create a story filled with amazing plot twists, emotional beats and a great atmosphere
Also this must be played after 999

<report>Definitely my favorite in the Zero Escape series. It is by far more ridiculous than 999 was so if you are not into that then this definitely won't be for you. However, I enjoyed that so this made for a very enjoyable game. In particular the route structure was very well done. Once again this game suffers from many bland and shallow characters, though there are a few good ones, and feels a little disappointing compared to the Infinity series' characters.

<report>I have mixed opinions on VLR. A lot of things feel like a downgrade from 999 (worse pacing, worse atmosphere, horrible visuals), I've seen people say VLR's cast is an improvement over 999's but I disagree, while characters certainly get more development, none of them genuinely interested me with the exceptions of Phi, Tenmyouji and maybe K (while 7/9ths of 999's cast was interesting to me from the start).

While I still think VLR is a good game that's well worth playing, my biggest issue with it is so many elements of this game are just recycled from older games that the writer has worked on, but almost all of them are done in a significantly worse way here. The ending also feels very... Read more »

<report>This is Uchikoshi's worst "big game". While I haven't played much of the infinity saga besides currently working through Ever17, I'm confident all of those are better than this. I understand this is a bold claim, especially considering the (fair) reputation of Zero Time Dilemma, but here are my reasons. First, the pacing alternates between repeating the same things over and over and not telling you everything, frequently doing that classic "Oops we have no time!" bit. It takes forever to get anything out of a character, frequently setting up information that won't pay off for hours with a "There's no time! We have to hurry!" even when it doesn't make any sense. Due to the amount of choice... Read more »

<report>Kyokugen Dasshutsu ADV - Zennin Shibou Desu

Volume two of the Zero Escape is even more ambitious and excessively grand in story than the previous title. Following a different cast in another deadly game of life and death. A story of betrayal and trust, of past and future where all characters' purpose is far larger than they'd ever know.

The setting is a little limited in extent, deprived of freedom perhaps. The change from 999's Gigantic to this warehouse is pretty big, in a disappointing manner. Also, besides a few individuals, the cast suffers from being boring and two-dimensional. The humongous timeline with an insane number of branching paths comes with a few disadvantages as well...
