Description

Taking place in Japan at the end of World War II. Devastated in the aftermath of defeat, the Japanese government complies with the Allies' reconstruction plan. Japan begins to recover from the loss after a few years, but America and China intricately divide the nation on a municipal level. Eventually, China's military districts become Chinatowns, and places controlled by the United States are Americanized. The many Chinese and American immigrants make Japanese people the minority in their own land. Some Japanese are unwilling to accept this fate and secretly gather their strength to challenge the new system.

A girl named Rose Haibara works at the club Primavera and lends money to Japanese people so that they can rebuild their lives. Meanwhile, Leo Shishigami is best known for his reputation among women. Everything begins to change when that legendary man meets Rose in the spring of 1947.

<report>Fun and entertaining all the way through, not a single dull moment, all of the characters are memorable in some way, great pacing. Absolutely love the how it handles it's themes of nationality, patriotism and war, a terrifying what-if scenario.

<report>Without any metafiction narrative, without any mystery, and without any horror, Rose Gun Days stands out from R07's more famous When They Cry series by being a surprisingly striaghtforward, no-frills gangland drama. That doesn't mean it's any less worth reading or alienating if you're a fan of his previous works. At its heart, it's manages to be one of Ryukishi's most captivating works in spite of its simplicity.

In essence, Rose Gun Days tells a very simple story of how a small alliance of Ladies of the Evening became a mafia powerhouse, told through the lens of 3 groups of distinct protagonists from the years 1947 to 1950, with Madam Rose as a central character throughout. Along the way... Read more »

<report>After having finished the epic tale that Rose Guns Days is, I can say with absolute, unwavering certainty that it is a classic masterpiece. A battle of beliefs that takes place in the underworld, a game of politics in a Post-WW2 Japan, devastated by the war and divided into districts of which the Chinese and Americans have their own policies.

I. At face value...

RGD might seem only like a crime drama filled with action, guns, and a ridiculously cool and overpowered main character, that one can't help but fall in love with. Under closer inspection though, this story shines most in its intimate moments. War buddies sharing a drink, talking about their histories, and being happy with the... Read more »

<report>Ryukishi07's attempt at a "normal" story is one that runs rather perpendicular to his more popular "When They Cry" visual novels, in that where those take place repeatedly during a specific timeframe, Rose Guns Days is an epic tale spanning half a decade. I was afraid that the lack of a console release with consistent spritework, voice acting, and CGs would be a massive detriment to my enjoyment- but I am very happy to be proven wrong.

THE GOOD
- The cast of characters is on par with Umineko, which is to say it is excellent. It does however have the same weakness as Umineko, which is that while about half of the cast is excellent and gets lots of screentime and development, the other half... Read more »
