Description

The story centers around Fuminori Sakisaka, a medical school student involved in a vehicle accident that claimed the lives of both his parents and left him with critical injuries.
He was rescued by experimental brain surgery that coincidentally altered his perception of the world dramatically.

Everything now seems to be composed of slimy intestines and gore to him. In addition, the rest of his senses: touch, hearing, smell, and taste, are also impaired, similar to his sight, further damaging his mental health.

Fuminori's desire to live dwindles, and one night, while still in the hospital, he contemplates suicide. However, a girl in a white dress named Saya appears before him. Compared to the horrible surroundings, she looks completely normal, if not downright gorgeous. Fuminori soon falls in love with Saya, and she becomes his raison d'être.

As time passes, Fuminori gets increasingly secluded from the rest of his normal life as he embarks on a mission to find a specific person Saya is looking for. Fuminori's friends and doctor get more concerned as he acts strangely over time. Nonetheless, they will soon cross paths, for better or worse...

<report>What exactly is there left to be said about Saya no Uta?

It's hard to deny Saya is one of THE most popular works in the VN community, standing at second place behind Fate/Stay Night. It's third in terms of votes as well, behind it and Katawa Shoujo, which is freeware. It's consistently top-ranking on JAST's storefront, and has the most plays of any Nitro+ work on EGS at over 3000, ahead of many community darlings. When memes about the bizarre logo of the 50th anniversary of the Osaka Future expo circulated, an entire wave of art for the game emerged simply because people were reminded of it. It's something that's still, with regularity, discussed and shared on discord on an almost daily... Read more »

<report>As a fan of cosmic horror, Gen Urobuchi's other works, and adventure games as a medium, it was inevitable that I'd pick this game up at some point. Had really high hopes for it, too, after hearing it being referred to as "one of the best horror VNs of all time" and "Urobuchi Gen's greatest work"; based on my tone here, however, you can probably guess that at the end of it all, I was not thrilled.

First, I'll briefly mention the things I actually liked about the game. The beginning, specifically the first scene, certainly left an impression on me. I like it when stories just jump headfirst into pure insanity as soon as you press the start button, it catches you off-guard. Another thing I... Read more »

One hardly needs to introduce "Saya no Uta" - after all it is one of the most famous visual novels in the West and for good reason. No, shock value is not that reason, but rather the fact that it is a brilliantly written little piece of fiction that, while being quite short, still manages to pack a real emotional punch.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.
-Howard Phillips Lovecraft "The Call of Cthulhu"

<report>I will preface by saying that Saya was one of the very first visual novels I have ever read.
I began to read them because they frequently covered themes rarely seen in mainstream media and,
being a large fan of Genma (the Urobutcher) Urobuchis Psychopass, I was disappointing to discover he
had moved on to more tame mainstream titles and would not be returning to the original themes (in my subjective opinion) that drove him to create in the 1st place.

The main theme of the SOng of Saya is, to take quote from Stephen King of writting horror fiction
"To make the ordinary seem horrifying and the horrifying seem ordinairy",
or in this case, beautiful, even.

I believe back then, in the 90's... Read more »

<report>A typical (semi-spoilery) death death kill story from Urobuchi. After seeing Madoka and his puppet show, I'm starting to see the limits of his writing.

Suspense/horror (that isn't just cheap jumpscares) in VNs live and die on the atmosphere and the atmosphere in Saya no Uta was decent, not amazing, so yeah. Mostly carried by the gruesome visuals which get old one hour in. The first scene was definitely shocking and memorable, though.

This was full of cool concepts, including one that the work itself says was influenced by IIRC a manga by Tezuka, Phoenix. The early implementations of the concept were interesting. But as always with Urobuchi he sets up the beginnings of what seem like good... Read more »

<report>Firstly this is a graphic VN that needs a lot of trigger warnings and not for the faint hearted. I am very much the desired demographic for this and as result of that this is well and truly a masterpiece. Firstly this is one of the best wrote pieces of fiction I have ever read, The characters are really well done and put across with real emotions and personality. The descriptions of what happen are very graphic and really well put to screen. The visuals are very well produced dark and graphic and scary in places and truly beautiful in others. The contrast between what Fuminori see's and the rest of the characters see is so well put across too. The Sound design here is truly breathtaking... Read more »

<report>The harmonious title of Song of Saya is a visual novel with an incredible atmosphere that’ll get inside the pores until it’s beneath the skin reaching the nerves. It is a space that’ll hijack your warm exterior making you feel the empathy manifest between the fibers that clasp and mark your humanity. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes a terrifying atmosphere of a horror story about love.

Not to say that I have some gripes such as Saya herself having the appearance of a child, specifically in the Protagonist’s eyes, thanks to his visual Amnesia; Agnosia. Nonetheless I was recommended this game due to it being the “most messed up visual novel” supposedly.

The story itself is quite... Read more »

<report>The storyline of Saya no Uta has changed my perspective on how I perceive protagonism and antagonism. It has really stretched the gray line between good and bad. This is due to the several routes that the game offers, which exhibits multiple perspectives from various characters throughout the game. What you could consider as the "right thing" to do could be discerned as an act or choice violating social norms and morals. Furthermore, this visual novel showcases how greed and selfishness could stray us from moral objectivity of right and wrong. In simple terms, this story narrates the perspective of Fuminori, who was just a normal university student who, in the wrong hands of fate, had to... Read more »

<report>tldr: If, going in, you are expecting to be treated to anything more than an unconventional horror mystery with an excessive number of sex scenes, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Saya no Uta provides an interesting, albeit somewhat unrealistic, metaphor for how a difference in perspective can have a powerful effect on one's perception of reality. I originally found it quite entertaining to watch the story unfold from two entirely different, starkly contrasting viewpoints. However, the characters are the dictionary definition of 'bland and uninteresting' and the events in themselves are a mix of common horror tropes and eroge antics. As neither seemed to warrant the critical... Read more »

<report>saya no uta is a miserable, unforgettable, intriguing and captivating experience.
i do have my issues with it - i didn't enjoy the sex scenes. i do understand that this is an eroge, but unfortunately to me it seemed like these scenes were placed with the purpose of shocking the viewer and being transgressive. i didn't enjoy it, so i chose to read the censored steam version, which was more particular to my tastes and i enjoyed it more. i do enjoy transgressive fiction (i am a visual novel reader, after all), but unfortunately i didn't enjoy the sex scenes, let alone the rape scenes. if you're like me and don't enjoy those, i'd definitely read it censored, it didn't take away anything from my... <report>saya no Uta wasn't a great experience for me, my main issue wasn't exactly the themes that was presented in the story but rather how it's delivered. protagonist suffered a terrible accident, causing his warped view of reality. seemingly creatures with a cognitive human ability and a flesh like environment enveloping his perception. a disconnection from others and humanity in general. he's isolated until he meets saya who's like a shining light full of darkness and basically a physical representation of happiness in fuminori perspective. the work tries to implement the themes of isolation and the deeps of human nature & perspective but it was executed in an awfully unsympathetic way and...
