Description

Ace Attorney 5 marks the return of Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist of the series since the original trilogy. The game takes place one year after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the events of which cleared Wright's name of the circumstances behind his disbarment and allowed him to practice law again. He will be accompanied by a new assistant, a rookie defense attorney and psychologist named Kokone Kizuki. The first case in the game will see Wright go up against the younger brother of Winston Payne, a recurring character in the series, as he defends a high school student who is charged for causing an explosion at the courthouse.

<report>Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is quite the pivot from the previous series installment - in some ways, bad (how about the HUGE retcon to Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney's ending!?)...and, in some ways, pretty good.

Mind you, the game's underpinning "Dark Age of the Law" storyline's potential was poorly-realized, despite being well-foreshadowed in the previous game. But, thankfully, the individual cases are fun, and the game iterated on the formula in many ways that I had hoped for: cases played from the perspective of multiple protagonist (including a new, third character, Athena Cykes), new gameplay mechanics, and Apollo's arc is moved forward (Athena also has some great moments).

My only complaint is that investigations in this game felt too "on-wheels". Overall though, a good installment.

<report>Dual Destinies' biggest problem is as a sequel to Apollo Justice. As a sequel Dual Destinies is awful, it ignores/retcons most of the stuff Apollo Justice set up while also having callbacks to some parts of it. It doesn't fully commit to just retconning the previous title and instead is a weird middle ground between ignoring huge plot points and character developments while also having tons of callbacks. It makes the game feel like it doesn't know what it's trying to be. This is made even worse by the fact that the game is both made as an entry point for new players while also having tons of fanservice and callbacks. Dual Destinies has a lot of issues but the biggest one is that it doesn't... Read more »
