ReviewThe Fruit Of Grisaia is one of the biggest visual novels out there, both in size and production quality. The script is around a million words long and the novel takes over 50 hours to read through. However Grisaia suffers from some pacing issues, and a lot of the filler content feels repetitive. In my opinion the game would have been better off with about a third of the script cut out or compressed.

The game begins with a lengthy common route, after which you will get one by one choices, that will ultimately set you off to a character route with one of the five heroines. All of these routes will then have two endings, which you'll get based on a choice you make towards the end of the route. In my opinion the common route was pretty bad, and I nearly gave up the whole VN during it, but if you manage to get through it, the character routes in my opinion are all noticeably better with the exception of Makina's route.

What made the main characters interesting, was that pretty much all of them we're suffering from a mental illness and / or a traumatic past. The highlight of the VN is definitely helping them get better during their routes. However the writing of the characters was rather disappointing. Even though they all have depth during their own routes, the rest of the time they are these predictable and one-dimensional beings supported only by a single personality (maid, tsundere, annoying tsundere, slutty big sister and loli) and a voice actor / actress.

Also probably worth noting that this is one of the very few VN's I've read where the H-scenes didn't feel unnatural nor bring the whole experience down. They aren't relevant to the story and you will be fine with a censored version, but if you're on the edge on weather to buy the original or censored version, the original in this case might be the better choice.

As I said on the beginning the production quality is rather outstanding. The voice cast is pretty big on VN standards, the soundtrack is decent and all in all there's around 100 pieces of CG to top everything off. However the game engine is clearly dated, and changing the resolution or toggling full screen is a pain in the ass.

All in all The Fruit Of Grisaia is a pretty good VN. The pacing was at times incredibly slow, and it definitely is a "heavy" read, but especially if you manage to get through the common route, you will probably be left pretty satisfied.

< report >It took me like 2 weeks to get through Amane's flashback on her route. By the time we returned to present day I had already somewhat forgotten what was going on, what the characters relations were etc. I think the flashback definitely had a purpose, but it went into so much needless detail and could have been condensed by at least two thirds. There probably we're a few other examples as well, but my memories of the VN have become rather hazy by now.Last modified on 2022-04-03 at 06:43
