Review | So, leading up to me reading Primal Hearts, my prior experience had been reading Mashimaro (Which I rated an 8), and then Study Steady (Which I stalled in the 2nd of 4 routes). A mixed bag, as I really enjoyed Mashimaro. Study Steady made me hesitant to read any further Marmalade titles but, I can say I'm definitely glad I got to this VN in particular. First off, the art. I definitely like the art style used, with very professionally drawn sprites, backgrounds, and CGs (Side note: The amount of detail they put into the H scene CGs like shadows and such is insane, in a good way). Not much else for me to say besides I really enjoyed the visual aspect of this novel, 8/10. Now, the H scenes. H scenes in Marmalade titles have always been the stickler with some readers, as some of them can go on forever with the MC turning into unlimited supply of you know what, and the heroines going full sex goddess. Now this was really bad in Study Steady, as the first half of their heroine route was diabetes central, and the latter half was just H scene, 5 minutes of text, another H scene, another 5 minutes of useless text, another fucking H scene, you get the picture. What I saw in Primal Hearts was, mixed. Personally I enjoyed most of them (There wasn't much of the kinkier stuff except peeing, though I did not read the side stories which are just extra H scenes so I coulda missed something), but there was one route in particular I didn't enjoy because of the good ol' H scene every 5 minutes thing (Which I'll get into later). Still, they were mostly enjoyable, some did go for an uncomfortably long time but, still bearable. 8/10 for the sexiness, 7/10 for the length of some of them. The music. The soundtrack for Primal Hearts was really good, you had awesome soundtracks with gentle music, upbeat music, perfect music for H scenes, serious music, you get the picture. You even got a unique ending song for each heroine, which is always very welcome in the VN genre. Really enjoyed the music this VN had, 9/10. Heroines. First off, WHY THE HELL DID BICCHI (Michi) NOT GET A DAMN ROUTE, JUST WHY?! For the record, her not getting a route did not affect my overall score but damn, with the hints about herself presented throughout the entire VN, it's a darn shame she didn't get a route cause she definitely woulda been my favorite heroine. For the heroines that actually did get routes, it's a mixed bag. Personally I really enjoyed Haruhi and Yuzuki (Best girl btw), as their characters were well executed and their personalities weren't, what's the word? I'll go with generic, as each of them had their own personality which differed from the other heroines (This applies to all 4 heroines). Sera and Kana were a different beast. Sera's route was really the only one I didn't like, as it followed the Study Steady pattern of H scene, 5 minutes of useless text, then another H scene, and her character changing into a sex goddess leaked into the other sections of her route, which ruined quality moments (Such as when she was proposed to by the MC). Kana was okay but, yet again we got a sort of FWB thing going and it just didn't make a ton of sense (Though it wasn't a big deal to me, might be to others) but overall, she was still a solid heroine. Haruhi 8/10, Yuzuki 9/10, Kanna 7/10, Sera 5/10. And the last giant section of this review, the story. Again, a mixed bag. As I saw reading other reviews across VNDB and other sites, the consensus was Primal Hearts had an excellent common route, but lost that magic in the heroine routes, and I can concur. The common route was a blast to read. Throughout the 4 or 5 episodes (I forgot the exact number), each heroine is given the appropriate amount of screen time (Though Yuzuki got preferential treatment in that department) to deal with their own problems and issues among the school in general. While the setting is still your usual high school thing, I really enjoyed the concept of it being ran by 2 opposing student councils with a democratic voting system in place (Though I feel like the MC not joining either council officially until near the end of a heroine route or not at all was dumb). The MC was also very well done (He even has eyes on some CGs!). Literally the first 5 minutes you think he's a complete moron taking advice from a magazine about how to get a girlfriend but, as you read on you realize there's a lot more depth to his character and he's actually very smart (And a badass). Once you get into a heroine route, the stories in each don't even come close to beating the common route but, each one is still pretty good except Sera's. The drama in each heroine route is meh because it's resolved almost comically easy and not a lot of time is spent on it but, I can give it a pass since this feels meant to be a moege anyway. The drama in the common route is pretty good though. For the entire VN's story, the common route is a lot stronger than the heroine routes but, each of them were still pretty good except Sera's (Sex, useless text, then more sex doesn't resonate with me), 7.5/10. Overall, there's not much I can complain about Primal Hearts. Most of the heroines are good, the common route is excellent, the side characters are good, the H content is pretty good, the music and art are very good, not a lot to hate about this VN outside Sera's route. 8/10, definitely recommend you buy. |
