ReviewNomnomNami is probably one of the most interesting Western VN creators. Adding to the refreshing art direction, she knows how to creatively approach some abstract or unusual themes in a light-hearted way. Here the topic is tragedy: what it means to create it and the pleasure of experiencing it.

Most of the story is pretty standard. You choose between four characters, each with a perspective on the events of what should be a normal day in their routine. The twist is that after following some paths, you can change some aspects of their personalities even when selecting another character. This will help find some new paths, but… Will all endings be tragic? Does tragedy have a purpose?

Saying more would spoil the reflection the game makes at the end. But I always appreciate this kind of meta-commentary, especially when it involves themes that span all of human history. I'm not saying it's deep. It's not a pretentious VN. But it gives food for thought, rather than just provoking feelings, as most VNs seem to focus on. Furthermore, I find its simplicity and creativity charming.

If you're here for the story, you'll probably be disappointed. The purpose of BAD END THEATER is not to tell a story traditionally. But if you appreciates narrative experimentation, unusual approaches to storytelling, and metafiction, you'll probably have a good time.
