| Review | Essentially Subahibi with fluff cut out and the philosophical aspects expanded, this time worthy of actual thought and attention rather than being a gimmick/reason to namedrop a famous philosopher. Not as extremely open-ended either, so arriving at a plausible answer is more rewarding. The only real story/writing issue is the second route which is almost identical to the first - it's not a massive deal, just involves alot of clicking through or ctrl holding and doesn't add much. Regarding the music - the tracks themselves are very short, which came to me as a bit of a surprise when I went to check the OST. They loop so well I haven't even realized they're less than a minute long. Other than that it incorporates subahibi tracks in the later chapters and has absolutely wonderful non-vocal endings. I normally rarely come back to tracks like these, but with TNSR they contain so much emotion, that in a way its a sufficient replacement for the lyrics. As far as visuals go, there aren't that many sprite variations, but whatever's there is enough and they get alot of extra "life" through small movements like shaking side to side or slightly jumping to add some energy to a line. The CG situation is a bit worse(?) as the majority of them is dedicated to H scenes, with few remaining to be sprinkled throughout. Considering how wonderful the non-H ones are - making up for the amount through sheer quality - and how much I liked the artstyle in general I'd vastly prefer if more of the artist's time was spent on them. Sidenote for H scenes I overall liked them, but I also think some didn't really belong and were a bit forced, specifically for side characters. At least they're short so it wasn't particularly annoying. Long story short if Subahibi was 30-70 on philosophy to eroge aspect, TNSR has gone for the opposite approach and it's 30 eroge to 70 philosophy. While not a replacement for subahibi, it's the kinda novel I think I wanted subahibi to be, looking back at all the filler in it after reading TNSR made me feel like I was wrong to have rated subahibi so high. It ENGLISH TL RANT Spoilers are light and should be safe to view I believe the biggest issue with it is the current english translation - while generally more than good enough and of high quality when there are no mistakes - it does have plenty of mistranslations and issues. It's clear it has not received a proper QC pass by someone who knows either japanese or english, as some lines don't require nip knowledge to catch - they just don't make sense. Like putting the end sky date as 21th while the entire game talks about it being on the 20th. Or Zakuro randomly complaining about pain while clearly in pleasure and wanting more While these issues may be fixable with a further patch if the TL team decides to release one - barring the fact there's way more of them which haven't been found and will not be until someone fluent in japanese does a proper QC - there's also ones that will almost certainly remain there until someone else patches them out, as the TL insists to know better what Sca-ji wanted his characters to say than Sca-ji does. That is to say, lines are toned up or down for no reason whatsoever beyond the translator's whims. Of course im not talking about subjective TL choices to wording things or language/line length limitations enforcing things, just lines that are blatantly wrong. For example Yasuko listing sexual acts (anal, fellatio) one by one gets turned into "I'll let you fuck me however you want", toning down how vulgar she is. Her blunt accusation towards Zakuro "selling herself" has also been toned down into calling her an "escort" - which isn't even accurate to begin with, as she works in a massage parlor. Siimlarly, Yukito mentioning "group suicide" is turned into "shit that went down here". With poor japanese comprehension, the "I know better" approach coupled with inability to grasp the concept of word severity and how they convey emotions and personality, it is nothing short of a miracle that through an insanely long chain of coincidences this turned out good and not a total disaster. Completely incomprehensible why one would stick to literal translations for most of the work and then defend disregarding the original script in favor of his own version. Perhaps delusions of grandeur as these issues only became more pronounced the further one read. Extremely annoying for this to happen to a novel of such quality when perfection was easily within reach. But yes, as I initially said it's also perfectly readable. The compromise of simultaneously being slop and not being slop. If you're not in a hurry just wait for a 1.1 patch or smth, assuming they release one. |
