Review | i'm damn near speechless... one of the most important, empathetic, impactful works of art i've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. throughout all of its highs and lows, it treats its characters and their traumas with a deep level of respect. ultimately, wonderful everyday is a story about how we cope with trauma and loss, and the way the core mystery unravels is surprisingly natural and organic rather than forced or contrived. i've walked away with a better understanding of philosophy, and an appreciation for the nuances of the human mind. and all of this is presented in a way that feels completely earned. i mean this with 100% sincerity when i say that the author insert character is actually one of the best in the entire game. i think that what sets wonderful everyday apart from other visual novels is that it positions itself as a very introspective, personal work, while not compromising any of its core nature. there is something so fascinating about the exploration of human sexuality on display here, from the most intimate scenes, to the horrifyingly gruesome. the presentation of trauma in the game is one of the best i've seen in any medium, ever. there are a lot of tragic things that happen throughout this game, but i can't think of a single moment that feels unnatural or forced. the early parts of "it's my own invention", and a large portion of "looking-glass insects" were very viscerally uncomfortable. the way a lot of the current (western) world views bullying is sort of a joke now, but these chapters really hammer home how dark it can get, and reading from the perspective of the victim makes it all the more impactful. reality as a concept, in both the game and the world we live in, is a little bit of a construct. the way neurons interact with each other is based on the way they've been conditioned to interact. some may argue that it's all a little bit of an illusion, but i think that's a pretty good way to describe the way our brains work. the world of the mind, the world of the embrace, the world of the sexual. my world is the world, and the world is me. in the end, wonderful everyday is about finding hope in the worst of situations, and understanding that life, in all its forms, is worth preserving. throughout all of the hardships we face, our fate is always in our own hands. we can choose to be happy, or we can choose to be miserable, but the wonderful days we have will always be worth it. |
