Review | The 9-Nine series has one major problem, that has little to do with quality, and it's completely subjective: "Episodic nature". Part of the annoyance is simple logistics, but personally, VNs need to have a proper ending (be self-contained to a high degree). Obviously, none of that has to match your own ideas, it's a simple sharing of an opinion. At any rate, this particular episode is good and the series is recommended, most of what you can find below applies to the other episodes. Positive: - Good art style - As far as "hyper-cutesy aesthetics" go, 9-nine looks very good, and that statement is likely to stay true for some time. - Meta elements - Without spoilers, they did a good job bringing these into the story, and made them relevant. Most "meta" you see in VNs is comedy, but they managed to increase the level (weaving them into the plot), and that's commendable. - Serviceable H-scenes - Visually, in terms of diversity, originality, and bringing the story to the mix. If we exclude "specialized" from the picture, this is solid. - Supernatural Powers - Conditional, since you need to like the usual ideas that lead to the "shounen/seinen" classifications, for this to be a positive, but if that's the case you will be pleased, there's "a ton of it". - Good voice acting - The protagonist is voiced, and the main cast does a good job, especially Sora in her own episode. - Nice story and setting - Nothing revolutionary, and your taste needs to match what's delivered. It's still well executed in terms of entertainment. Logic and coherence are different topics. Negative: - What was mentioned in the intro. Another problem is taking time to become interesting (it gets darker, more serious), and dropping this after the first episode seems like a real possibility. Score: 7.5/10. Nice VN and worthy (sort of) conclusion. The series as a whole needs to be scored less generously, and some patience early on might be necessary. If you want a story about superpowers, saving the world, big bad villains, and magic artifacts, then try the first episode. It's a common statement, but it gets better as the episodes progress. |
