Review | Aiyoku no Eustia(AnE) is an excellent VN, that probably dropped a tier in recent years, due to its release date (getting old), and the medium's progression. Don't let this dissuade you from reading it however, because even if time took its toll, this is a still a must read, that has many things going for it, chiefly among them the rather unique scenario, born from commonly used elements. Positive: - Great voice acting (V.A) - In particular Eris gives a great performance, and the protagonist is voiced as well. - Lots of interesting and contemporary themes - The main one is social inequality, and from that you have things like poverty, prostitution, drugs... It's different from the usual VN, and very welcome. - Western setting - AnE is a VN that tries to recreate a medieval European setting (with fantasy), and stays away from Japanese idiosyncrasies. There are noticeable exceptions like using honorifics (the target audience was still Japanese), but it's remarkable how far they strayed, from the usual VN with high school girls, while maintaining a semblance of traditional. - Good pacing - Ladder structure is not ideal when a VN has a lot of options (you can get in the wrong route), but AnE is engaging enough, and immersing yourself in its world is easy and enjoyable. Do the heroine routes in order, go back to the main story each time, and "profit". - Nice characters - They have backstories, inner conflicts, jobs, persisting habits, number of traits is high, inner conflicts exist, group dynamics make them clash and bond... And it's not just 1 or 2 of them, this is the rule. Negative: - The title's age is catching up to it, to a point where technically limited (broad notion) will be a reality very soon (compare it to Daitoshokan, for instance). The real negative however, is the ending of AnE not being in line, with the quality that came before it. You can see it coming a mile away (no surprises), but it's still underwhelming, and the ending of the title WILL make its lasting impression. Score: 8/10. "Accusing" a VN of being old, is a topic with a lot of room for discussion, but that's not the intent. If you don't put that much value in the "technical side" increase the score, and know that this is definitely deserving of its popularity and rating. |
