Review | Irotoridori no Sekai is a VN of "highs and lows", and as luck would have it, the ending segment is a high, that allows for a positive lasting impression. Basically, this is a more than competent Nakige, that made some weird decisions, and "stayed the course" for most of the duration. With that said, when they "turn on the waterworks" the effect is powerful, and that's all you can ask of this sub-genre, so the score is mostly built on that. Positive: - Main heroine - The VN lives and breathes Shinku. It doesn't matter if she is in the scene or not, the anticipation of getting to her route, is something you don't see everyday in a VN. As you might expect, attributing so much value to one character has its drawbacks, and while the end result is positive, this is also one of the weird decisions mentioned in the intro. - Wisdom - If this author has one talent, then this is it. The amount of life experience passed down subtly (without affectation) is remarkable. Barely noticeable sentences that provide you with a message on events, or the true self of a character. Very impressive, not a lot of people can pull that off in a non-threatening (intellectually) way. - Mystery - Revolutionary (not great, just distinct) might be the correct word. The author has an "open policy" right from the start, and gives you the tools to figure out what is happening in this "world". With so many VNs that take hours to do the same thing (often past a point of interest), this becomes a strong positive. - Emotional segments - 3 routes do a good job in this regard, and provide you with the expected feelings at the right time. It's true that Shinku is stealing the show, but subjectivity permits different opinions, and Red + Black (other heroines) are also good bets, if "tickling" your sensitivity is the goal. Negative: - Many things ("lows") - Heroine appeal (inner comparisons); Death being any sort of problem (to the reader), with an explicit cycle of reincarnation being depicted; Character interactions are limited (shockingly so); Annoying recollections on events that serve no purpose; Voice acting in general; Pacing feels obstructive (many hours); H-scenes aren't great; And more. Score: 7/10. It's tough to make a recommendation. On one hand, there is quality here, and occasionally greatness is in sight. On the other, we have many complications, and a VN where you are "living for the highs" (duration is working against it). Try it, if "Nakige gets you going", that should work. |
