ReviewI can't even conceive into words how boring this game is. It just fails in every aspect that would make it be an enjoyable experience.

Although the gameplay has some interesting strategy traits, after almost 2k battles, which more than 70% are useless and won't even give you a good amount of XP, you just wanna jump out of the window when the same monster appears in front of you and you have to deal with painful 40 seconds in what's supposed to be an easy battle that should have last less than 5 seconds but everything is so slow that this will never happen.
As if this wasn't enough to make the gameplay excessively tiresome, every 5 minutes you are obligated to return do town, read the same 3 dialogue lines, sleep (or maybe fuck a girl, but I don't think you're horny or patient enough to choose this option every single time) and then return.

About the story, I actually don't think it's that bad. It is way more superficial than the previous Rance games, but at least doesn't try to do something major and fails. Just a dumb plot with the same old characters and new ones that are just uninteresting, but they don't have screen time so it's okay. Further development of the relationship between Rance and Sill and cute scenes. Now, apart from that, what it makes the story looks worse than it really is is, again, the horrible gameplay. In the narrative of this game, from point A to point B, there's a bridge where you'll have to deal with like a hundred of useless battles and resolve dumb puzzles, some of them I don't even think are possible to solve without luck or exploring every option in the game and then conclude that you need to go to some random place from 4 chapters ago and then use a random girl you don't even remember that exists in order to continue the story. The logic just don't make any sense, believe me, AliceSoft was trying to make 1993 players spend 100 hours to complete the game.

If there's a quality in this mess of a game is the BGM... or is it? I'd love to praise the soundtrack, if literally every good one music wasn't placed in a local that you'll use for 5 minutes and then never returns. 5 minutes of some quality music for more 2 hours of generic medieval soundtrack being looped.

Another thing that is relevant being said is the eroge. Ok, right, I don't play Rance series for H-scenes (believe me or not), but it's such an recurrent aspect that it's impossible to not notice. While in the other games you'd meet a bunch of new girls and would have to solve some puzzles in order to H, in this one there're basically 4 new girls and you can fuck them almost right away. Isn't a thing that would bother me, but after 3 games with well-made side quests for H-scenes I can't just let pass this feeling of a rushed and incomplete Rance game.

In conclusion, I hate this game. The story isn't bad, but isn't good either, just irrelevant, and every other feature is abominable at a level that if you have insomnia problems, they made the perfect game for you.

Dude, you played the remakes, and probably with MTL since 03 is not translated and you deliberately went for the TL'd version of IV. If you played IV after III, you'd see how much more enjoyable the gameplay was.

< report >It was indeed a biased opinion of mine in the eroge section, since I never finished any original game (played like 2 hours of each and went for the remakes), but the gameplay itself wouldn't get any better, just more enjoyable than the previous game

(sorry if I answered in the wrong place, I don't know how to use vndb lol)

< report >Anything you experience is completely subjective and based on previous experiences. Just because it didn't change objectively doesn't mean the whole experience wouldn't have been different if the proper order was followed. Anyway, the remake is surely coming out sometimes in the next 20 years, so it give it a shot again then. And don't give up on the rest of the series just because you hated one of them. Each game is very different, as you've noticed. Not just in gameplay, but the overall atmosphere and how Rance develops in the late games.Last modified on 2021-01-15 at 07:25

< report >#1 I might agree with you if we're talking about the combat, but i have no idea how the dungeon-crawling in IV is better than III.

Oh, I can definitely understand this point hahaha For future players, I strongly recommend that you make use of a guide in this game; Chapter 5 in particular is too intricate and insufferable (I still have hopes for a future remake).
