ReviewKieta Sekai to Tsuki to Shoujo was a visual novel that I have had the pleasure of reading, despite how relatively unknow this vn seems to be. At its core, Kiesekai is a supernatural mystery vn, and although for some people the supernatural elements of the novel may take away from the mystery aspect, the main mystery itself is built up properly, with hints sprinkled out properly in all the other character routes to build up to the big reveal of the true route. Before I get into more details, I will preface this by saying that this novel may not have the same enjoyment for everyone, but I'd really like to try and explain what about this novel I like so much, and why it'll always have a special place in my heart despite some flaws the novel has.

To start off, the overall characters of the main friend group has a pretty decent dynamic going on. What I especially like was the overall dynamic of how one of the guy characters, Suzukaze Ryousuke, interacted with the rest of the group, actually feeling like a leader of a friend group and saying some pretty good lines here and there. One negative however, is probably that at a surface level some of the characters do feel kind of shallow, while some other side characters felt like they should have had more screen time but was cut from the novel (i.e. a lot of the members of the juuni hitoe). This sentiment will be a bit of a reoccurring theme, as the main demerit of this novel to me was that it felt too short for what it was trying to accomplish.

Moving onto the character routes, the mystery aspects of each of the routes are done quite well, each route giving its own share of truth about the world to the main character and to the reader. A lot of the scary moments in the novel are actually done with good timings, and really helps build of the atmosphere quite well. Although it is possible to play any of the 4 character routes in any order before the final route, I would highly recommend reading the routes in order from top to bottom, going from Miina -> Anzu -> Tsubame -> Rui and then finally the true route, Kaguya. The main downside of the routes, however, was that each of the characters felt undeveloped, and their relationship with the main character felt kind of hollow for most of the characters, where romance just kind of happened and a lot of the time to develop their relationship felt like it was skipped over with a few day timeskips. Once again, going back to the problem of not being long enough.

On a technical aspect, this novel scores quite heavily. The OST selection, while not that massive, has some extremely memorable and great songs. The main title theme, Kaguyahime, and Otherworldly Atmosphere were two big standouts to me. There were probably only one or two tracks that I personally didn't like, and each ost was used effectively to bring out a proper mood for the most part. The first OP song is amazing, and would have been my favorite track if the true route ED song didn't exist. The CG is also quite fantastic. While the normal everyday life CG may be quite standard, it makes a very nice contrast to the more unique artstyle taken for the more serious CGs, which are just phenomenal.

So, what about this VN do I like so much? Surprisingly enough, the main part wasn't actually how well built up the true route reveal was done with proper hints given through the other 4 routes, but was in how you arrive at the answer. At a glance, the truth may somewhat be obvious, but as a reader you can really feel that you may want to avert your eyes from the truth and stay ignorant until the very ending, just like the mc. Although the mc and the reader may have already arrived at the truth, the mc averts his eyes to the very end and the reader is also pulled along, and solving the mystery is no longer a major concern. This final part I wrote may be hard to understand, and it is hard for me to explain as well, but the whole aspect of this and how the true route played out truly stuck out in my mind, and the final choice of the true route was done very well leading towards two different endings, neither of which is strictly the "correct" answer.

Overall, although I realize that this novel may not be for everyone, i would encourage others to try reading this novel for themselves and draw their own conclusions about how they felt. Also Kaguya best girl.

< report >#1 yep, this vn and dc4 is almost same but read this vn still more enjoyable than dc4. Though both of them still ruin the true end in it, for this vn kaguya true route give disappointing development at end of route where her secret route too short to explain everything properly

< report >This game would've been more known and liked, if the writing wouldn't be so darn bad. Not everyone cares, but a lot of people do. Bad writing makes moving from plot point to plot point awful.
But that's what happens when the writing was literally outsourced to some random poor dude, while the plot and whatnot was created by someone else.

This was probably the VN of 2018 with the most wasted potential.
