Recommended for: ...I don't think I'd really recommend it to anyone. Just read/watch Ukyo's route. He is best boy.

My route order: Toma > Kent > Ikki > Shin > Ukyo. Ukyo's route is the best by far. Least favourite guy? Eh....I didn't really feel enough about any of them to have an emotional reaction, but probably Toma or Ikki.

Amnesia: Memories is probably the only visual novel that can make me yawn simply from thinking about it. That's how utterly bored I was while reading it. It's an absolutely terrible sign when four out of five of the character routes feel like a chore. The sad thing is that not all of them necessarily felt like that all the way through. Shin's route, for instance, had moments of being interesting. But sadly it was never meant to be. The only route that actually held my attention was Ukyo...and, depressingly, you need to play all the other routes to unlock him. Considering that the visual novel clocked in at over 30 hours for me, I wouldn't recommend sitting through this snorefest just for him. Even if he did make me actually enjoy the game for once. I suppose you could force skip through all the other routes, but I'm not sure the game is worth a sale price simply for Ukyo.

Amnesia's plot isn't ground-breaking or exceptional. Its main selling point is, by far, the pretty art. The CGs are mostly gorgeous. Sprites are pretty but inconsistently placed; there are numerous times you can see them shifting a few pixels up or down as the characters change expression. Backgrounds are pretty meh. The OP and ED are very good, but the background OST is mostly forgettable apart from a few stand-out numbers.

The characters are consistently written, but rather shallow. Kent is boring, which kills me because his VA is one of my favourites. Shin is okay. Ukyo is best boy. Toma is just grating, but I don't like his voice or his aesthetic. A lot of people will tell you Toma is the worst character with the worst route. I actually thought he wasn't that bad, though that's likely because I know of a character from a different otome VN that makes Toma look like a pure angel. Ikki is annoying for a whole different reason: the man doesn't have the balls to defend his own girlfriend.

The vast majority of the game can mostly be described as shallow -- not that there's anything inherently wrong with that. But it's important to also make the game interesting...which it isn't. Dialogue is boring. There's nothing ever really interesting happening. It's not even a good slice of life, because I can't get invested in the heroine (who is worse than most otome protagonists), her friends, or her suitors. Some routes, it felt like a whole lot of nothing happened.

TL;DR this VN is boring and not even Ukyo can redeem it. Not worth it even on sale. Just watch Ukyo's good route on Youtube.

Go play Code:Realize, Cinderella Phenomenon, The Second Reproduction, or Black Wolves Saga if you want a good otome.

< report >If you think Ukyo's route is the best then your order is completely wrong. "Shin > Ukyo" means that Shin is "greater" than Ukyo. Or did you mean you did them in that order?Last modified on 2021-07-08 at 14:22

< report >Ninius - that's the order I did the routes in!

Charlize - I'm glad you enjoyed this game more than I did! :) I enjoyed Ukyo so much that I would like to play the other games even if only for his route.

< report >Hahaha I know right! Ukyo was the only route that I really liked and I wouldn’t have liked the game as much without him :]

< report >I started playing it three days ago, only did Shin's route so far ,currently playing Ikki's and I can say Iam actually really board ,like you said nothing is happening at all, the only reason Iam playing it because Iam interested in Toma's and Ukyo's route ,so I think Iam going to fast skip the game.
I wander why is it so popular ?Last modified on 2023-01-20 at 10:27

< report >I'm mystified as to how it's so popular too.

I feel like Ukyo may be the main drawing factor but that doesn't fully explain it either. Most of the routes are super uninteresting.

I wouldn't blame you for skipping through most of the routes honestly, you wouldn't feel like you miss much.

I hope you will enjoy Ukyo and Toma's routes!

< report >It had some notoriety among otome fans before it was translated because of the dog cage thing, so a lot of people were curious when it became available.

It also got put on a HUGE sale on steam not long after the English release iirc, which shocked a lot of people and made a bunch of folks snap it up immediately.

< report >#7 back in the day, there was almost no otome games available in ENG and Amnesia was one of the first to get translated. So it automatically became popular because people had almost nothing to compare it to.
Even today there are many players who love this game out of nostalgia.
