|Review||The usual disclaimer: I'm not an old school rance fan, hell i do not even like classic jrpgs very much. And yet i still wanted to see what all the fuss everyone is making about this series is about.|
The first thing i noticed when playing for one session (5 to 6 hours) was the obtuse point and click nature in which this remake is structured on it's city map. You have to follow specific things and interact with characters a certain way to progress the story, not the other way around. This made it pretty much a requirement to use a walkthrough (i used the one on the alicesoftwiki) for this game and that in turn is clearly written to 100% complete the game. There is little to no indication inside the game (for most of it's runtime) or on that walkthrough itself, as to what events are optional and which are required to progress the story.
On top of that, there is a boatload wrong with the combat gameplay as well. From the rng heavy combat system letting you and the enemy miss or getting one-shot like there is no tomorrow to the way the dungeons are designed. The biggest offender is the loot placement. You will have to go through nearly all of these dungeons twice to get the gear in them, and you will be shit out of luck if you are not 3 card rows max form the row the loot is placed, that btw is harder as it sounds, because there are cards blocking your way all the time. And if you are, have fun doing a "bonus round" through the thing.. again. All the while getting attacked by mobs which drain your character's health and test the player's patience at the same time.
On the plus side the chip system giving you more slots to work with as you progress is very versatile and even lets you stack weapons, items and armor. The best feature on the gameplay side of things, imo. Oh and you also are not punished for taking more days to complete the game, thankfully! Having said my piece about the gameplay. Now let's get to the best parts of this one.
The writing is very well done! While it is pretty basic in the overall plot, it does still achieve most of what it sets out to do by the very end. And most of the character backstories you get to read are well worth your time. There comes a moment towards the last third of the game, where you will want to visit every single character in the city, again even if the walkthrough doesn't tell you to do so. Just because these characters grew on you that much, and you want to hear more about them, the world and even their work.
It is a crying shame how all of these great story and character moments are buried this deep under gameplay systems which just love to waste your time, test the limit of how to annoy you and all around have just so many stumbling blocks along the way too often. Don't get me wrong! I do recommend the game, but if you start having doubts about the gameplay at any time while you are playing, just use cheat engine to spare yourself from most of the tedious crap this game will throw your way.

|< report >Don't stop until X bro, you won't regret it.|
These series have the best worldbuilding on this medium, there are no exceptions.
Also try playing 03 instead of Rance 3, even if you don't play jp-only games. My personal recommendation.Last modified on 2021-09-14 at 06:16

|< report >Don't worry i do plan on plaiying the whole series, eventually.|
But i also do want to play the games in order, which means i will have to stop. I did get suggested jumping into Rance VII again (i played that for maybe 10 - 15 hours many years ago) but i do not want to skip anything. Could mean it will take me years to get to the end, i know that. But i don't think skipping ahead is any better than just waiting until all the games are remade (in the case of an eventual 04 remake) and translated into english.
In any case thanks for reading and commenting. Have a good one!Last modified on 2021-09-14 at 06:16
