Review of Sanoba Witch

ReviewI've seen a lot of people pushing this as the best Yuzusoft game. And while I understand that we're all starved for a truly exceptional Yuzu game, it's just not a company to take risks. The result is always an incredibly inoffensive vn with cute heroines and a "gimmick" of sorts to drive the main plot forward. I will say, though, that Sanoba Witch is one of the better Yuzusoft games; maybe it's nostalgia blindness or something (as this was the first I played), but I genuinely think some of the routes have a very nice build-up and payoff. Just a really sweet time. And, as is the case with all vns released by this company, it drags on in the second half of each route with all the endless ichaichaicha. But oh well, it's not the worst thing in the world.

< report >Dude, how about playing some yuzu games before you start to talk about the whole company?
You have 7 votes on your account, my boy, and not even all english yuzusoft games rated. That makes your credibility extremely questionable, to put it lightly.Last modified on 2021-11-22 at 22:44

< report >I have no problem with ichaicha in general. I'm just saying that it becomes a chore to read through all of it in the second half, especially if there's no notable character development

< report >Parquet was interesting, but it has a different target audience than the moege. I don't think I'm stretching when I say that Yuzusoft likes to play it safe

< report >Yes, but by targeting a different audience they alienated their previous fans.

And that's the wrong attitude. The games are made for people who like it. Not for those who don't mind it.

< report >Fair enough. I just think that it is, from a storytelling perspective, a poor choice to dedicate half the route to ichaicha

< report >I mean, yes, but within the moege they release, it's all very standard. People know what they like, so I can't imagine that Yususoft releasing a game in a different genre would seriously impact their sales. Or maybe it did, I don't follow their financial situation closely enough

< report >I hope Yuzusoft/Ritsu to stop trying to include some plot, as they fail horribly most of the time. Those side character routes are often more enjoyable without those awkward dramas.Last modified on 2021-11-23 at 12:08

I just want Yuzuge to dedicate the entire route and entire game to Icha-Icha, and dump all their ‘storytelling’ ideas. Discard any attempt on plot/novelty/so-called character development.etc. Seconding #11.
Do people read moeges for ‘stories’?

< report >#12 wait what? So ppl would ichaicha and have sex with no context whatsoever? That ain't gonna work. Better off reading a nukige instead. Some still has routes, and you get what you came for way faster.

< report >What context?

MC intro → MC meets the girl → MC gets inside her pants after a period of time →They both fuck a lot → End

The above pretty much defines almost all moeges. The difference between moege and nukige is that moeges (the good ones) try to naturally pace the above, while nukiges couldn't care less (and they shouldn’t). Everything else other the above is an add-on, and icha-icha / moe is the primary one that breaks or makes a work, for me. Not saying add-ons are unimportant, as they are the ones that define the quality of moege, while the other is the skeleton of the work. I just want the entire add-on in the form of moe/icha-icha, and Yuzusoft excels at them .i.e. moe (and only at them).

Onikiss is the best moege I have read till now, primarily because it does exactly that - 100% Icha-Icha, and didn't fuck around with anything else. Giving an example for why it works.

Better off reading a nukige instead. Some still has routes, and you get what you came for way faster.

Well, the chief reason I read a moege is for moe/icha-icha and H-scenes are simply a nice bonus - I believe it’s the same for most people. And moe/icha-icha in nukige are almost always extremely mediocre, and already am stuck with a huge share of nukiges sadly.

< report >The thing is, there are moege that do indeed do character development and storytelling well. Yususoft's own Senren Banka, in the Murasame route, remains an example of good characterization in a visual novel for me. The moe is like a way of endearing a character for me; who doesn't like cute things? But above all, I have a hard time getting invested if the characters aren't strong from a storytelling perspective. Why should I care about what happens to someone if they're just a moe blob without struggles and aspirations, that can stand apart from the mc and still be compelling? That's part of the reason why I prefer charage over moege, but as I've said, I've seen moege that pull it off to a very decent extent. Now that I've seen that it can be done well, my standards have been kind of jacked up in regards to characterization in moege. When it's lacking, it's a bit disappointing.
