ReviewA very stylish writing by Narahara Ittetsu. It depicted vivid swordfights, analyzing every movement, every detailed thought, making his writing coming to life.
The plot of this game is rather simple, without lots of mysteries, but that doesn’t mean it’s a boring plot. To understand this plot, we must first understand its character. There exists criticism about this game’s character development, feeling that its kind of weak for every character. In my opinion, the two main character, Takeda Akane and Igarasu Yoshia, are more like swords than human. That is why the story ends in the winner commit suicide after defeating his fated enemy: as a sword, he has already finished his destiny, and there is no reason for he to be alive anymore. Both of them became tools to fight each other, and that guy chatting with Takeda Akane in the Hokodome-no-Kai’s basement also raised similar points. As they are more like tools rather than human, their choices of action are very hard for others to accept, and reading it for the first time, it’s difficult understand their action, like why Takeda Akane is so vicious and care for no one, or why Igarasu Yoshia killed Takeda Shou during the last scene. Other side characters weren’t detailed depicted as this is a rather short VN.
The background and world setting is really fascinating. If the nukes have not been successfully exploded in WWII, what would happen? To avoid another west/east Berlin situation and raising the tension even more, the US and USSR decide not to forcefully occupied all of Japan, but they're still trying to control it with ideology. Finally the boost of economy brought by the western world during the Korean conflict bring capitalism and consumerism into this country. Then, Ishima Kaigen (a direct reference towards Mishima Yukio, their philosophy are very similar) created this Tokyo, gives swordsmanship a place in modern world.
There are some decent BGM for this game, I really loves the BGM for the final dual, "BLADES ART TWO", though some are mediocre.
Overall, I feel like it is a very enjoyable story if you dig in to it.
