ReviewWonderful Everyday is a beautiful story that features one of the most genius mysteries and best characterization I've seen in the world of visual novels. It impacted me a great amount, and is something that will stick with me for a long time.

It's also truly repulsive, and something I would never recommend to anyone.

This game being as acclaimed as it is honestly baffles me. It seems like the sort of thing that should be as niche as possible, only to be loved by idiots like myself who are willing to overlook its countless ridiculous decisions and unbearably bad content to appreciate the messages it, deep down, has within it. Wonderful Everyday is comically esoteric, almost to the point where it feels like it's trying to obfuscate its relatively simple and derivative themes by making them incomprehensible. If you can't understand something, it must be deep, right? It's a "philosophical" work, one that attempts to inject excerpts from ancient literature naturally into its story. I appreciate it, I really do. I understand how much it takes to tie these preexisting themes into your narrative and make it digestible to anyone unfamiliar with the works it's borrowing from. It's admirable. The issue is that Wonderful Everyday's true depth isn't what I would consider relevant to any of this nonsense. Personally, I find the philosophical content extremely fun and fascinating, but still ultimately surface-level in the subjects covered. It really does feel like it's pretending to be something more than it is, which is a shame, because the game has plenty of brilliant content and incredible ideas as well.

The 18+ content in Wonderful Everyday is the obvious biggest issue with the game. It's horrific, and even as someone who desperately wants to excuse as much as possible from this game that I do love with all my heart, I can't even begin to understand the decisions that led to some of the worthless 18+ scenes that destroy everything good the game builds up. It takes a massive amount of willpower to appreciate Wonderful Everyday. The offensive content in this game is sporadically placed throughout it, and is sometimes directly side-by-side with some of the most incredible, fascinating moments I've seen in any visual novel. The amount of whiplash this game provides is absurd. The offensive content is far from being limited to the 18+ scenes, either, it seeps into the rest of the game plenty. It's especially important to note how bizarrely homophobic this game is—there were a ton of jokes that made me extremely uncomfortable, and there's even plenty of casual slur usage if that wasn't enough. What's truly the most repulsive about Wonderful Everyday isn't the ultra-shocking content designed to viscerally horrify you, it's the scenes that are actually meant to elicit positive emotions from the player yet are still absurdly offensive and disgusting.

Behind all the nonsense, Wonderful Everyday is definitely incredible. However, the fact that it's so incredible is what makes me all the more disappointed by it. For better or for worse, Wonderful Everyday is a story I'll never forget, but I'll always be saddened by how much it insists on shooting itself in the foot. Do not play Wonderful Everyday, it's not worth it.

< report >The "faggot" and "tranny" in Tomosane's conversations with Master are the funniest parts of the game lol
