ReviewAs much as I respect the work that was put into this and want to like it, I just can't get past the fact that the story is intensely boring. You strip away the train lore dumps and all you're left with is a bunch of really cliche anime tropes. The protagonist, despite being an adult with a seemingly interesting backstory, plays as just your usual painfully oblivious anime protagonist, and the heroines are always playing the painfully coy and generic part. It's just going through these motions you've seen in a million bad anime with little nuance, and it moves at a snail's pace.

Like, here's some examples of your typical scene in Maitetsu. MC did some shoveling and is going to the public baths to rinse off the soot, and a childhood friend flusters over how they're both naked in the bath and how the doll girl (oh yeah, there's train doll girls here) is getting too close to him, and he's like hm, I wonder what she's so upset about. In another scene, the crew gets together to go over this old guy's documents to find the whereabouts of a train. A girl asks the MC to hold up a ladder so she can fetch a book from above, and flashes everyone her panties in the process, then gets all flustered and falls into his lap.

When it's not being super moe-anime-generic, it's doing some really dry train info dumping. I've read VNs about subjects I don't give a crap about and have been plenty entertained, like astronomy in A Sky Full Of Stars, or literally any shonen sports show, but the train stuff here is so dull. They fail to make it meaningfully interesting.

It's such a shame because the art and engine stuff is really good. Everything looks great and the game has a cool timeline system and some other nifty features. But actually reading through the story bored me to tears. I can't recommend this.
