Review5/10 -> 8/10
95% chance you will regret starting it.
90% chance you will not regret finishing it.

FINISHED IT. 2022-11-03 (woke up the next day to finish it)
The remaining endings didn't really connect things as much as I expected. Will try to read a few explanations before totally signing off on this game though.

UPDATE - 8/10 - 2022-11-03
I finished Jabberwocky II I think, not sure what the ending I got is called but I'm pretty sure I got at least one "true-ish" end. Wanted to update this review ASAP but I'll probably go back and finish the other big endings (though I don't think I'll be finishing all the smaller content like Kagami/Tsukasa endings in chapter 1 etc.

What I said in the old review is still true and accurate in general, except for the character writing and half of the filler which takes on new meaning in retrospect or simply improves once you get past the 2nd? 3rd? chapter: It's My Own Invention.
Here are my main complaints with the visual novel (why I couldn't give it 9/10 or 10/10).
- Still kind of random. Not everything connects, and not all the literary elements crammed in seemed necessary to tell this story. However, I was very satisfied by the connections/explanations revolving the "central characters".
- Didn't go the extra mile to establish some realism. In moments of cruelty, instead of feeling true pain and empathy, those feelings were always stifled by a lack of realism, or overuse of conveniences. Like, rape a girl in front of a random karaoke employee and that guy doesn't do jack shit or bullies get a girl to strip in public and a crowd forms but NONE of them record the bullies on their camera and share it anywhere. Some of the suffering seemed a bit over the top and too straightforward.

Overall there was a lot of experimentation and exploration, of various presentations, philosophical subjects, human psychology and character traits, etc. Even though the VN was very well-put together, in the end it feels like the author simply threw things together (very well, I might add) and wanted to wax poetry about those things and try to make them meaningful somehow. It brought up many diverse and interesting topics and themes but I don't think the author strived to connect them meaningfully, it was more like there were a lot of interesting digressions around.
I don't care much for structure, organization or form, but I do think resonance is as important as the humanity of the characters in a story, and Subahibi was a bit all over the place. Whenever it comes to a few of the main characters, the level of connections and possible interpretations on the side of the reader, and hence resonance, are shockingly impressive, but everywhere else it seems a bit phoned in.

I'm aware that this is rated below white album 2 and muv-luv alternative, which I think is justified because of the consistent focus on several themes and characters/relationships that the author tries to honestly explore with all their might, whereas in Subahibi, like I said, it's a bit too carelessly random. One last example is the theme of a tragedy isn't caused by just one person: I agree with this, I'm sure we all do, in fact it's pretty obvious for any decent thinker, but it feels like it was introduced, we spent at most an hour on plot events that related to it, and bam bye bye we're done with this theme. Y'know?

Maybe the other 2 endings and bonus route will raise the score further.

OLD REVIEW - 5/10 - 2022-05-01
Dropped this around chapter 3 when the schizo talk was getting unbearable. Overall the character writing is laughable. There were lots of great ideas but WAY too much filler and I say this as someone who was able to end up enjoying Muv-Luv Extra's 30 hours of SOL scenes (and fell in love with Higurashi's SOL scenes). This is my first Denpa so maybe I'm just not initiated, but Chapter 1 and 2 were just fine in terms of wackiness but after that I just couldn't give a shit.

< report >Agreed.

Also, the comment about Muv-Luv is spot-on. Extra's SOL and light-hearted atmosphere is done quite well (and it's deliberate, given what comes later in the saga). I think the reason it's so controversial is that a bunch of ADD-addled dumbasses heard that the plot is grimdark mecha sci-fi and they can't sit still long enough to digest the prologue chapter before getting to the meat of the story.

< report >Regardless of this game, I feel that actually liking Extra, or Muvluv in general, isn't making me very confident in how much value this review has. I always figured that something like this and Muvluv are about as opposite of each other as possible. As in, it'd be hard to actually like both.

< report >@plisken thanks for da upboat
@kiru there's literally NOTHING wrong with liking Extra, it actually has character writing as opposed to SubaHibi. Anyone who has any taste in fiction/literature cannot genuinely claim that SubaHibi's 3rd chapter has good character writing, regardless of whether or not it gets better, there is a good payoff, subjective preference etc.

< report >#2 I'm not sure why you'd think a review doesn't have value just because the reviewer liked a different vn. If anything, if we assume your statement is correct it gives this review more value because now anyone who likes Muv-Luv knows they likely won't enjoy this.

(As a side note, I love Muv-Luv but I could barely make it through Extra at the time, I hated SoL back then lol)

The problem with that logic is if the op likes ML it has no bearing on this review what so ever because as you said, they are completely different from eachother. You pretty much defeated your own statement.Last modified on 2022-08-11 at 08:49
