The writing quality is relatively high throughout, from the SOL scenes to the dramatic to the comedic. I would give it at least a 6-7/10 based on that alone.
In terms of twists, I predicted a lot of the early ones and felt smart. But then I ended up being really surprised later on, even though I'd already played Doki Doki Literature Club. Of course, Totono (the VN this review is for) is on a totally different level.
You can tell there was so much effort put into this game. Some "gameplay elements" got a bit boring and repetitive but some messages the game had, such as relationships with a higher/unreachable/different entity or something (I'm super tired as I type this, forgive any dumb statements) were really cool, especially with how they were presented.
There were some scenes which seemed a bit cheap, just for shock value, or cheap emotional manipulation etc. And the romance itself wasn't a White Album 2 tier masterpiece or anything. And while usually I dislike the whole "epic subversion!!! super postmodern bro!!!" kind of stories, without spoiling anything, I will say that when this visual novel tried to surprise me, it did so with a ton of effort and heart put behind it. There was clearly a vision behind it, which I appreciate.
The interactivity, the branching of the story in small areas that added up, the weight that throughout the VN built up to the final choice, the very creative multiple ways of breaking the 4th wall, just how far Miyuki went for "YOU", separating "YOU" from you so clearly, also the sex scene with YOU, the phone multiple choice and what that was supposed to imply, etc. I loved it all.
FINAL VERDICT: Definitely worth at least one playthrough. Very intellectually stimulating and I don't mean that in a pseud way. It shows you, and gets you doing, some interesting stuff and might even get you thinking. Not sure I would call it a masterpiece story, but I would call it a masterpiece VN pretty easily.

They told you it's against the spirit of the game, so don't feel forced to. Only the very last part is different, anyway.Last modified on 2022-06-23 at 10:07
