ReviewA thrilling rollercoaster to be remembered by otome fans!

Plot:

The dreary setup of the story really sucks you in from the moment you start. I felt I was easily able to connect with the main characters and understand all of their motivations. The plot is threaded through each character's route so I had this constant pull to keep going to find out how it will all end. There were moments that really pulled my heart and I felt the pain of the MC as she did what she had to do. The ending was very satisfying though there was some info dumping to wrap up loose ends in the secret route. The game reminds me of Re:Zero and Stein's Gate, but told through an otome lense which I never knew I wanted until now.

Romance:

I think its important to mention that the romance takes a backseat during the story. However, all epilogues are romantic and as a romance enjoyer, I was very happy with that. In a way, it felt more satisfying that the happy ends were in the epilogues due to the over arching plot of the story.

Gameplay:

This game has some investigation and trial elements, but is still plays like your standard otome visual novel. I normally play with a guide, but I decided not to for this so I can better feel what's at stake. It definitely made me enjoy the game a lot more than I already did! I will say the game is forgiving of wrong choices in these parts so if you prefer the standard VN experience, it should still be fun for you.

Art:

I love the character art. I think the short hair MC is gorgeous and all love interests are very handsome. The CGs were great and really added to the sad and tender moments. However, I have some gripes with the background art. The backgrounds were pretty plain 3D renders especially when it came to bedrooms and offices. Night scenes just had a blue filter overlay. I felt the characters clashed with the background often times.

Technical:

The bad - I felt the audio for the characters were very quiet even though they were at 100. I was always wishing I could turn them up! As for spelling errors, there were about 10 that I noticed throughout the whole game.

The good - I can't speak on the JP to ENG translation, but I will say the prose of the ENG translation was written so beautifully. I was in absolute awe of the translator's writing style. There was one line in Zenn's route that absolutely floored me. I want to put it on my Pinterest or something! So good! Also, I liked how exact I could be with the text speed and auto speed. The auto speed gave appropriate time for the internal, unspoken dialogue. Each character is very expressive/has multiple facial expressions and it definitely helps immerse you in the game.

The game can be 20 to 35 hours long depending on your reading speed and if you let the voice lines play out. Many felt the shortness is not worth the full price of the game. I'm actually okay with the length. However, if you're a busy person and don't have time to dedicate 60 hours to a console otome, but want to play them, this might be good for you. So this can either be bad or good depending on your preferences!

Final thoughts:

I give this a 9/10. My 1 pt drawback is due to the background art and technical issues. That said, this is definitely my favorite otome game of all time. I hope there will be a FD or sequal in the future and I'm looking forward to more console otome from Voltage. They definitely threw their hat in the ring with Even if TEMPEST, especially by making it a global release.
