Review | Hikoumukou attempts to answer the question of "What is love?" and provides a meaningful, albeit underdeveloped answer to it. The work is centered around Mishio Eiri - her character is dynamic & she develops through the course of the work. The more you like her character, the more you'll like the work - she makes some understandable, but not-that-fun-to-read mistakes throughout the course of the work. Her route, while not officially the 'true' route, is the most complete & should be read last. The other heroines are likable, but most of their routes are underwhelming (either too rushed, or have no bearing on the story itself). This is a shame, as some of the heroines are really fun to read. The protagonist is not a hetare, but he's 駄目 all the same (most of the drama could have been avoided if he wasn't the way he was - this is done 'meaningfully' though). Perhaps he's realistic through is inability to take 'explosive' action (the type of guy to console the bully to change his/her heart rather than to confront the bully head-on; great for a Lifetime movie - but the reader never feels 'catharsis'). Ultimately, Hikoumukou has meaningful lessons that it wants to convey - reception of them will be contingent on how well you're willing to listen when the events often feel dumb. |
