ReviewThis must be a "character game" in the purest sense of the word. VN spends a lot of time with the characters interacting and having fun while making it clear that they have different facets depending on the enviroment they're in. In the sense of making each character remarkable, i have to say this VN is top notch.

However, when it comes to plot, this might be the slowest VN i've ever seen. I can't even rank the routes properly, because most of them come down to "protag hangs out with acquantaince until they fall in love, the end", with second to last route (in console version) having some mystery buildup to last route, and said route revealing everything about the protagonist before the whole thing ends.

I'll consider it a borderline great VN because of the great character work and how well that plays into the atmosphere, but if you have a low tolerance for slow VNs, i can't recommend it at all.

P.S. to fill space: I might try the After Story someday to see how much chemistry the main four heroines have with their protagonists, because the routes give a big feeling of "that's it?" when it comes to that.

< report >Your review is spot-on. There is something I would add though - even if it is a very slow "charage", the most interesting character in the whole game (GARUDA!) didn't get nearly enough screen time or his own heroine (he got a guy instead, lol). A shame, really.Last modified on 2020-11-24 at 16:11

< report >Update: i highly recommend this video link. It might be focused on the anime, but it covers a lot of the storytelling that i couldn't grasp at all in my readthrough. It's not enough for me to raise my rating, but it made me more appreciative of the story.Last modified on 2021-12-28 at 13:09

< report >Definitely consider picking up the After Story if you're still interested. It doesn't really do that much with the protag-heroine dynamic aside from the banter and silly H-scenes, but it does go into Youji's parent's backstory further - especially his dad - and includes probably my favorite bit of writing in Oretsuba, an afterstory for Shusuke, who helps Asuka (and Linda, kinda) deal with her grief of losing Takashi while juggling his relationship with Hiyoko. Very poignant. I never really liked Asuka in the main game, but in this... Yeah. (That story is also the origin of the Shusuke-Asuka manzai bits in the anime IIRC)Last modified on 2021-12-28 at 16:25
