Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth
|By||Vote: 5yorhel on 2020-09-03|
|Review||What I came for: The interesting Sci-Fi backstory & cute animal-eared girls doing cute things.|
What I got: Endless padding of the story with pointless wars (75%), cute girls doing cute things (15%), gameplay that's fun for a short while but gets tedious really fast (5%) and an interesting Sci-Fi backstory that does actually tie in to the original game (5%). The worst part is that the gameplay sequences get longer and more frequent at the same time that the story finally starts to get interesting, so even that part was hard to enjoy.
This would have been an excellent sequel to Utawarerumono if the war subplot was thrown out, the gameplay toned down and the remainder was merged into Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen. As is, it felt like a waste of time.

|< report >Wow, a review from our lord and master Padishah Emperor Yorhel IV!|
So, from your votes I can see that you consider the series going progressively worse with each installment. That's somewhat disappointing, as the original is one of my favourite VNs and I was thinking of picking up the sequels during the sale. Well, I'll still pick them up, but maybe I'll have to temper my expectations.

|< report >@1 IDK why you ignore the rest of the reviews, each of which considers this game as the best in the series, lol.|

|< report >wow I agree with yorhel on this a lot. |
"Endless padding of the story with pointless wars (75%)" exactly. the war dragged on too long. I don't care if wars have to be crafted carefully because enemy could read into you thus the time waste, but from a storytelling pov this is huge no.
"cute girls doing cute things (15%)" aka more padding. aka more Haku abuse. aka more emasculation of men. all scenes using the same rehashed formula until the uta1 characters came along.
"gameplay that's fun for a short while but gets tedious really fast (5%)" didn't bothered me too much since the gameplay is easy enough that you could bypass the levelup screen for many times before the enemies start hitting hard. but yeah at some point I stopped caring about the gameplay and wanted more story.
"and an interesting Sci-Fi backstory that does actually tie in to the original game (5%)." hmm, I'd rather say they're trying too hard. so many convenient plot points that screams forced and they just want to end this asap. examples are when the writers conveniently nuked the entire town JUST so they could move the plot forward and tie the events to uta1. another example is as soon as the amaterasu satellite have done its purpose the "convenient" key got conveniently broken.
"This would have been an excellent sequel to Utawarerumono if the war subplot was thrown out, the gameplay toned down and the remainder was merged into Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen. As is, it felt like a waste of time." 50 hours of game time when it can be trimmed to 10 hours or even 5 hours. that's 40-45 hours of me eating excess fat and shit and just 5% of meaty content. I'm really really salty with this VN.
